[Termes IGN] terrainRésumé : (Auteur) Soil erosion is widely predicted as a function of six input factors, including rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility, slope length, slope steepness, cover management, and support practice. Because of the multiple factors, their interactions, and their spatial and temporal variability, accurately mapping the factors and further soil loss is very difficult. This paper compares two geostatistical methods and a traditional stratification to map the factors and to estimate soil loss. Soil loss is estimated by integrating a sample ground data set, TM images, and a slope map. The geostatistical methods include collocated cokriging and a joint sequential cosimulation model. With both geostatistical methods, local estimates and variances at any location where the factors and soil loss are unknown can be computed. The results showed that the two geostatistical methods performed significantly better than traditional stratification in terms of overall and spatially explicit estimates. Furthermore, the cokriging led to higher accuracy of mean estimates than did the cosimulation, while the latter provided decision makers with reliable uncertainties of the local estimates as useful information to assess risk when making decisions based on the prediction maps. [Termes IGN] volcanologieRésumé : (Auteur) Advanced Land Imager (ALI), Advanced SpaceThermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), and Hyperion imaging spectrometer data covering an area in the Central Andes between Volcan Socompa and Salar de Llullaillaco were used to map hydrothermally altered rocks associated with young volcanic systems. Six ALI channels in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range (0.4-1.0 um) were useful discriminating between ferric-iron alteration minerals based on the spectral shapes of electronic absorption features seen in continuum-removed spectra. Six ASTER channels in the short wavelength infrared (1.0-2.5 um) enabled distinctions between clay and sulfate mineral types based on the positions of band related to Al-OH vibrational absorption features. Hypeimagery embedded in the broader image coverage of ALI and ASTER provided essential leverage for calibrating and improving the mapping accuracy of the multispectral data. This capability is especially valuable in remote areas of the earth where available geologic and other ground truth information is limited. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article considers two types of tools used for the analysis of spatial data: computational tools for grid data and visualizationbased interactive exploratory techniques. The main purpose is to demonstrate that computational and visual techniques are complementary, and their combined use in data analysis may produce a synergistic effect. To this end, we describe two example scenarios of data analysis in the evaluation of potential damage from earthquakes and in analysis of forest resources. The analyses were performed with the use of CommonGIS, featuring the availability of powerful geocomputational tools and interactive visualizationrelated facilities that can be efficiently used in combination in a desktop environment or via the World Wide Web. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Data (or digital) products and services do not have a normal scale, although they should have clear statements as to the range of scale for which use is appropriate, and 'health warnings' about use at inappropriate scales. Unless they are planimetric and for local use, they will also involve degrees of selectivity and generalisation. Data products can be created from maps or vice versa. The data-centric approach has many advantages, and is increasingly being realised. This has led a distinction between model generalisation - appropriate to the wide range of rendering and analysis tasks the data is designed to support - and cartographic generalisation, which focuses on the specific task of producing maps to particular cartographic specifications. The article gives an insight into Mapping Agencies Generalisation NETwork (MAGNET), which has a goal to provide a platform in which users could influence product directions and contribute expertise and research, based on the facts that generalisation is a key interest of the user community and that the current technology and platform offer a very promising way ahead.
