[Termes IGN] Normalized Difference Vegetation IndexRésumé : (Auteur) This study demonstrates the use of high resolution WorldView-II satellite data in extraction of built-up land and vegetation using normalized index techniques. The PCA 1 and NIR 2 bands-based built-up index was proposed for extracting built-up land, which exhibit high accuracy. The normalized difference vegetation index based on Red Edge and NIR 2 bands of WorldView-II produced high accuracy in the estimation of vegetation compared to the use of Red and NIR bands. The grid technique used in estimating built-up and vegetation density from precisely classified images provided better and accurate assessment of built-up and vegetation density in heterogeneous landscape of urban areas. This shows areas of very high to high built-up density are located in the central, western and southern parts, which are primarily devoid of vegetation. This study indicates possibilities of utilizing high resolution satellite data in urban landscape characterization using a grid-based technique. [Termes IGN] télédétection spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) We propose a semiautomatic procedure to generate land cover maps from remote sensing images. The proposed algorithm starts by building a hierarchical clustering tree, and exploits the most coherent pixels with respect to the available class information. For a given amount of labeled pixels, the algorithm returns both classification and confidence maps. Since the quality of the map depends of the number and informativeness of the labeled pixels, active learning methods are used to select the most informative samples to increase confidence in class membership. Experiments on four different data sets, accounting for hyperspectral and multispectral images at different spatial resolutions, confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach, and how active learning techniques reduce the uncertainty of the classification maps. Specifically, more accurate results with fewer labeled samples are obtained. Inclusion of spatial information in the classifiers drastically improves the classification accuracy, leading to faster convergence curves and tighter confidence intervals. In conclusion, the presented algorithm provides efficient image classification and, at the same time, yields a confidence map that may be very useful in many Earth observation applications. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) High resolution satellite imagery and airborne Lidar data can characterize the earth surface with unprecedented details in spatial and structure information, respectively. However, most studies have used them separately instead of in combination for land surface mapping. Considering their highly complementary nature, it is critical to investigate whether and how the integration of both can improve the accuracy of land cover and land use (LCLU) mapping. This study explored the use of Quickbird imagery and airborne Lidar data for mapping a complex urban environment in the City of Curitiba, Parana State, Southern Brazil, which is composed of secondary shrub vegetation, grass and climax primary Araucaria forests combined with urban objects such as roads and buildings. Airborne Lidar data were processed to generate DEM, DSM (Digital Surface Model), and DHM (Digital Height Model). The DSM generated from Lidar data were used to orthorectify Quickbird image with photogrammetric skills. A large number of metrics are generated from Lidar DHM, Lidar point cloud, Lidar intensity, and Quickbird imagery using object oriented segmentation approaches. Due to their power in handling non-parametric data, decision-tree based approaches were chosen to select the most relevant metrics and build rules for classification. It was found that the fusion of both types of data with decision trees increased the accuracy by 5 to 15% and resulted in an overall accuracy over 90%. Taking into account the increasing accessibility of Quickbird and airborne Lidar data, it is expected the methodology developed in this study has profound impacts in shifting our current paradigm in LCLU mapping.
