[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) method of forest attribute estimation and mapping has become an integral part of national forest inventory methods in Finland in the last decade. This success of kNN method in facilitating multisource inventory has encouraged trials of the method in the Great Lakes Region of the United States. Here we present results from applying the method to Landsat TM and ETM+ data and land cover data collected by the USDA Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. In 1999, the FIA program in the state of Minnesota moved to a new annual inventory design to reach its targeted full sampling intensity over a 5-year period. This inventory design also utilizes a new 4-subplot cluster plot configuration. Using this new plot design together with 1 year of field plot observations, the kNN classification of forest/nonforest/water achieved overall accuracies ranging from 87% to 91%. Our analysis revealed several important behavioral features associated with kNN classification using the new FIA sample plot design. Results demonstrate the simplicity and utility of using kNN to produce FIA defined forest/nonforest/water classifications. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) An approach to simulating land-cover patterns based on historical landuse maps and forecasts based on models and planning documents is described and demonstrated. The approach uses stochastic spatial simulation to generate land-cover patterns on the basis of a land-use map and stated translation rules. The translation rules take the form of (1) a table that summarizes the proportions of each land-cover type within each land-use type and (2) a description of the spatial arrangement and/or pattern of land-cover types. In a demonstration of the approach, we calibrated the translation rules using aerial photo observations and simulated current and future land-cover maps for Livingston County, Michigan, USA. We tested the approach in a test area that was not used in calibrating the translation. The proportions of land cover within each land-use type were reasonably well estimated, except where the amount of the same land use was small in the calibration site. The use of location rules significantly improved the fit of estimated land-cover patterns with observed patterns for the test area. The paper discusses how the method can be used to bridge land-use scenarios and their ecological impacts based on landcover patterns. [Termes IGN] précision de la classificationRésumé : (Auteur) A new technique for predicting missing field boundaries was developed to increase the accuracy of per-field classification. This technique is based on a comparison of within-field modal land-cover proportion and local variance. Analysis was performed on 4-m and 20-m spatial resolution imagery derived from Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) data, to simulate the difference in land-cover classification accuracy between multispectral Ikonos and Satellite Pour l'Observation de ]a Terre (SPOT) High Resolution Visible (HRV) imager. Initially, per-pixel classification was performed, followed by per-field classification. The technique for detecting missing boundaries was then implemented, and per-field classification was carried out a second time using updated field boundary data. Finally, an accuracy assessment was performed. The results demonstrate that classification was significantly more accurate when the missing boundary flag was used, and that simulated Ikonos imagery was considerably more accurate for this purpose than simulated SPOT HRV imagery.
