[Termes IGN] Soil Adjusted Vegetation IndexRésumé : (Auteur) This work describes a genetic programming (GP) approach that creates vegetation indices (vi's) to automatically detect the sum of healthy, dry, and dead vegetation. Nowadays, it is acknowledged that VI's are the most popular method for extracting vegetation information from satellite imagery. In particular, erosion models like the "Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation" (RUSLE) can use VI's as input to measure the effects of the RUSLE soil cover factor (C). However, the results are generally incomplete, because most indices recognize only healthy vegetation. The aim of this study is to devise a novel approach for designing new VI's that are better correlated with C, using field and satellite information. Our approach consists on stating the problem in terms of optimization through GP learning, building novel indices by iteratively recombining a set of numerical operators and spectral channels until the best composite operator is found. Experimental results illustrate the efficiency and reliability of our approach in contrast with traditional indices like those of the NDVI and SAVI family. This study provides evidence that similar problems related to soil erosion assessment could be analyzed with our proposed methodology. [Termes IGN] villeRésumé : (Auteur) The study of impervious surfaces is crucial to the sustainable development of urban areas due to its strong impact on urban environments. Remotely sensed high-resolution imagery has the advantage of providing more spatial details; however, digital image processing algorithms have not been well developed to accommodate this advantage and other characteristics of such imagery. In this article, an object-based fuzzy classification approach for impervious surface extraction was developed and applied to two pan-sharpened multi-spectral IKONOS images covering the residential and central business district (CBD) areas of Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Fuzzy rules based on spectral, spatial and texture attributes, were developed to extract impervious surfaces. An accuracy assessment was performed for the final maps. The results indicated that the spatial patterns of extracted features were in accordance with those in the original images and the boundaries of features were appropriately delineated. Impervious surfaces were extracted with an accuracy of 95% in the residential area and 92% in the CBD area. Road extraction achieved accuracy a bit lower, with 93% and 90% from the residential and CBD area, respectively. Buildings were extracted with an accuracy of 94% from the residential area while 89% from the CBD area. It is suggested that the CBD area had a higher spectral complexity, building displacement and the shadow problem, leading to a more difficult estimation and mapping of impervious surfaces. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (auteur) Submetric satellite imagery (Pleiades, GeoEye) offers advantages for map update purposes, e.g. an interesting ground resolution, a good reactivity and the ability to capture wide areas. Experiments on the use of such stereoscopic images for 2D change detection among building objects of GIS topographic database are presented in this paper. Two approaches have been tested. The first one extracts land cover from satellite ortho-images and additional information (correlation DSM-DTM, database) and compares building objects of this classification to those of the database. The second one creates a pseudo-DSM from height information of database building objects combined with a DTM and compares it to a correlation DSM computed from satellite images. Obtained results are quite encouraging even if the correctness rate remains too low for an operational use.
