[Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (Auteur) Land surface temperature plays an important role in many environmental studies, as for example the estimation of heat fluxes and evapotranspiration. In order to obtain accurate values of land surface temperature, atmospheric, emissivity and angular effects should be corrected. This paper focuses on the analysis of the angular variation of canopy emissivity, which is an important variable that has to be known to correct surface radiances and obtain surface temperatures. Emissivity is also involved in the atmospheric corrections since it appears in the reflected, downwelling atmospheric term. For this purpose, five different methods for simulating directional canopy emissivity have been analyzed and compared. The five methods are composed of two geometrical models, developed by Sobrino et al. and Snyder and Wan, in which the vegetation is considered as an opaque medium, and three are based on radiative transfer models, developed by François et al., Snyder and Wan and Verhoef et al., in which the vegetation is considered as a turbid medium. Over surfaces with sparse and low vegetation cover, high angular variations of canopy emissivity are obtained, with differences between at-nadir view and 80° of 0.03. Over fully vegetated surfaces angular effects on emissivity are negligible when radiative transfer models are applied, so in these situations the angular variations on emissivity are not critical on the retrieved land surface temperature from remote sensing data. Angular variations on emissivity are lower when the emissivity of the soil and the emissivity of the vegetation are closer. All the models considered assume Lambertian behaviour for the soil and the leaves. This assumption is also discussed, showing a different behaviour of directional canopy emissivity when a non-Lambertian soil is considered. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Quantitative classification of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM and ETM +) imagery can provide a very useful medium for showing urban change at a watershed scale. It shows both the nature and the degree of urbanization with a resolution equivalent to that of the original TM image. Estimates of urbanization-related factors such as surface imperviousness and canopy cover can be coupled to illustrate the process of urban growth in the watershed using change vector analysis. When used together and combined with standard GIS data sets such as digital line graphs and digital elevation models. Quantitative classification can provide the parameters needed to run standard hydrological models that can be used to describe or to forecast the effects of urbanization on area streams. Watersheds provide a meaningful scale for the analysis of the connections between urbanization and the environmental changes it brings. The study area for this paper is the Tinker's Creek watershed in northeast Ohio, USA. Tinker's Creek is one of the largest and most varied watersheds in the area, and it is subject to significant urbanization stress. Urbanization in the watershed is reflected in four TM images of northeast Ohio over a 15 year period (1984-1999). Quantitative classification provides a rich and detailed picture of urbanization over the time period of the study. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Study of the detailed structure and ecological functioning of urban and peri-urban systems is intensifying due to increasing concentration of the human population into urban centers. Much of this increase is expected to occur in semiarid to arid cites. Data from new high spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution satellite-based sensors promise to increase our understanding of global urban ecological and climatic processes and improve city and land planning capabilities. Two of these sensors, the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), provide an opportunity to compare urban spatial structure (distribution and configuration of discrete land cover/land use classes on the landscape) with contemporaneous measurements of surface biophysical composition at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Such combined measurements are useful for modeling changes to urban climate, hydrology, and biogeochemical cycles caused by modification of the landscape. We compare gridded landscape metrics derived from expert systern land cover classification of ASTER to corresponding MODIS NDVI data at scales of 250 m/pixel, 500 m/pixel, and 1 km/pixel in order to determine which of these scales is optimal for monitoring of urban biophysical processes and landscape structure change. Weak positive and negative correlations between NDVI and landscape structure were observed at all three spatial scales for the metrics Class Area, Mean Patch Size, Edge Density, and Interspersion/Juxtaposition Index.
