[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper examines the feasibility of spectral mixture analysis (SMA) in deriving comparable physical measures of urban land cover that describe the morphological characteristics of cities. SMA offers a way of analyzing satellite imagery of urban areas that may be superior to more standard methods of classification. Mixing models are based on the assumption that the remotely measured spectrum of a given pixel can be modeled as a combination of pure spectra, called endmembers. SMA, using four image endmembers (vegetation, impervious surface, soil, and shade), was applied to an IRS-1C multispectral image in order to extract measures that describe the anatomy of the Greater Cairo region, Egypt, in terms of endmember fractions. The resulting fractions were then used to classify the urban scene into eight classes of natural and human-built features through a decision tree (DT) classifier. The accuracy of the DT classification was compared to the accuracies of two per-pixel supervised classifications of the IRS-1C image employing maximum likelihood (ML) and minimum distance-to-means (MDM) classifiers. Overall KAPPA accuracies were 0. 88 for the DT classification based on SMA fractions, and 0.60 and 0.45 for the classifications conducted through ML and MDM respectively. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Attempts to analyze urban features and to classify land use and land cover directly from high-resolution satellite data with traditional computer classification techniques have proven to be inefficient for two primary reasons. First, urban landscapes are composed of complex features. Second, traditional classifiers employ spectral information based on single pixel value and ignore a great amount of spatial information. Texture plays an important role in image segmentation and object recognition, as well as in interpretation of images in a variety of applications. This study analyzes urban texture features in multi-spectral image data. Recent developments in the very powerful mathematical theory of wavelet transforms have received overwhelming attention by image analysts. An evaluation of the ability of wavelet transform in urban feature extraction and classification was performed in this study, with six types of urban land cover features classified. The preliminary results of this research indicate that the accuracy of texture analysis in classifying urban features in fine resolution image data could be significantly improved with the use of wavelet transform approach. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) The goal of this research was to explore the utility of very high spatial resolution, digital remotely sensed imagery for monitoring land-cover changes in habitat preserves within southern California coastal shrublands. Changes were assessed for Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve, a large open space in San Diego County, over the 1996 to 1999 period for which imagery was available. Multispectral, digital camera imagery from two summer dates, three years apart, was acquired using the Airborne Data Acquisition and Registration (ADAR) digital-camera system. These very high resolution (VHR) image data (1 m), composed of three visible and one near-infrared wavebands (V/NIR), were the primary image input for assessing land cover change. Image-derived datasets generated from georeferenced and registered ADAR imagery included multitemporal overlays and multitemporal band differencing with threshold selection. Two different multitemporal image classifications were generated from these datasets and compared. Single-date imagery was analyzed interactively with image-derived datasets and with information from field observations in an effort to discern change types. A ground sampling survey conducted soon after the 1999 image acquisition provided concurrent ground reference data. Most changes occurring within the three-year interval were associated with transitional phenological states and differential precipitation effects on herbaceous cover. Variations in air temperatures and timing of rainfall contributed to differences that the seven-week image acquisition offset may have caused. Disturbance factors of mechanical clearing, erosion, potentially invasive plants, andfire were evident and their influence on the presence, absence, and type of vegetation cover were likely sources of change signals. The multitemporal VHR, V/NIR image data enabled relatively fine-scale land cover changes to be detected and identified. Band differencing followed by mutlitemporal classification provided an effective means for detecting vegetation increase or decrease. Detailed information on short term disturbance effects and long-term vegetation type conversions can be extracted if image acquisitions are carefully planned and geometric and radiometric processing steps are implemented. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (INSAR) and laser altimeter (LIDAR) systems are both widely used for mapping topography. INSAR can map extended areas but accuracies are limited over vegetated regions, primarily because the observations are not measurements of true surface topography. The measurements correspond to a height above the true surface that depends on both the sensor and the vegetation. Conversely, topography from LIDAR is very accurate, but coverage is limited to smaller regions. We demonstrate how these technologies can be used synergistically. First, we determine surface elevations and vegetation heights from dual-baseline INSAR data by inverting an INSAR scattering model. We then combine sparse LIDAR observations with the INSAR inversion results to improve the estimates of ground elevations and vegetation heights. This is accomplished via a multiresolution Kalman Filter that provides both the estimates and a measure of their uncertainty at each location. Combining data from the two sensors provides estimates that are more accurate than those obtained from INSAR alone yet have dense, extensive coverage, which is difficult to obtain with LIDAR. Contributions of this work include 1) combining physical modeling with multiscale estimation to accommodate non-linear measurement-state relationships and 2) improving estimates of ground elevations and vegetation heights for remote sensing applications.
