[Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) A precise simulation of soil water content (SWC) and actual evapotranspiration (ETa) in a region or a catchment depends on the accuracy of the spatial data inputs. In this study, we developed a simple grid-based soil water balance model. In this model, remotely sensed vegetation data are used to estimate spatial distributions of daily SWC and ETa rates. The model was validated by comparing simulated SWC with the measured by gravimetric method and time domain reflectometry (TDR) at an experimental test site located in Northeastern Germany in the time period 1993–1998. The index of agreement IA and the root-mean-square error obtained from the comparison of the TDR measurements to the simulated values ranged from 0.45 to 0.80 and from 0.029 to 0.061 cm3/cm3, respectively. The comparison of simulated ETa rates to those measured by four large-scale lysimeters at another test site showed IA values above 0.87 and R2 values higher than 0.59. For the regional application of the model, a method was developed to integrate the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) vegetation data into the model. The MODIS data used in our study consist of 16-day normalized difference vegetation index and 8-day leaf area index products. Regarding the spatial application of the model, our approach was tested in a catchment located in Northeastern Germany in 2001–2003. A sufficient correlation between daily discharge rates measured at two observation gauges in the catchment and the corresponding simulated discharge rates and also good correlations between the simulated ETa rates and the MODIS-leaf area index values indicate that the model is an appropriate simulation tool at regional scale if the corresponding additional spatial databases regarding surface and soil properties are available. [Termes IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) A two-year study was conducted in 2002 and 2003 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas's center for urban water conservation to assess canopy spectral response of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) grown under various combinations of N and irrigation (based on leaching fraction: LF) treatments. Multispectral measurements were acquired using a ground-based spectroradiometer (200–1100 nm) on a biweekly basis during the growing season (October–May) in 2002 and 2003. Multispectral parameters were correlated with soil–plant parameters and temporal variability was investigated. Results showed that the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), stress index (SI), photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and canopy reflectance at 693 nm, were highly correlated with tissue N concentration (TN), tissue moisture content (TM), TN*TM and canopy colour, as influenced by N and LF treatment combinations. [Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) Assessment afforest decline is severely hampered by the limited information on tree death on short temporal and broad spatial scales. In order to evaluate forest decline rates in cork oak of Southern Spain, an analysis was made of statistical correlation between the 4 IKONOS sensor original bands acquired in 2000, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Infrared/Red Index (IR/R) and defoliation information obtained from the ground study. IKONOS near infrared band was negative correlated with defoliation (Pearson Correlation -0,762). The correlation between defoliation and IR/R ratio (Pearson Correlation -0,506) and NDVI (Pearson Correlation -0.449) was also significantly correlated. The dispersion of data presents in each category of defoliation justifies the use of the median value as the representative variable value for each intervals of defoliation. The Statistical Index of Defoliation (SID), generated from a lineal combination of IKONOS sensor bands, shows a correlation rate of 0.85 with the deforestation ground estimate. This study shows that high-spatial-resolution satellite data can now be used to measure forest decline processes, suggesting many new alternatives to evaluate the impact afforest decline in Mediterranean forests. [Termes IGN] Viet NamRésumé : (Auteur) Large concentrations of herbicide were sprayed onto the forests of southern Vietnam in the 1960s and early 1970s. Over 30 years later, many of these contaminated forests have regained full canopy cover, albeit with reduced chlorophyll content. The European Space Agency produces an operational product for the estimation of terrestrial chlorophyll content over large areas of terrain. This product uses data recorded by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on Envisat and is called the MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI). The relationship between historical levels of herbicide contamination and contemporary MTCI was strong (R = 0.86) and negative, with high levels of herbicide contamination being associated (via low levels of chlorophyll concentration) with low levels of MTCI. This is the first published study to demonstrate a relationship between MTCI and a surrogate for chlorophyll content. The next stage of this research is to build on the strength of this relationship and use contemporary MTCI to estimate historical herbicide levels during the 1960s and 1970s across southern Vietnam. [Termes IGN] spectromètre imageurRésumé : (Auteur) To determine the degree of comparability between three spectrometers (Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec Pro FR (FR), Analytical Spectral Devices HandHeld (HH), and UniSpec Spectral Analysis System (UN)), leaf spectra of three species (Cafea arabica, Lantana camara, Eriobotrya japonica), recorded from each instrument, were compared using two illumination, viewing, and field of view (FOV) scenarios. Scenario 1 eliminated differences due to illumination, viewing, and FOV conditions. Scenario 2 represented a ‘typical’ illumination and viewing set-up for each instrument. Six vegetation indices were computed from the raw spectra as well as spectra (1) interpolated to 1-nm intervals (the sampling interval of the FR) and (2) interpolated to 3.3 nm (the sampling interval of the UN). The spectra measured from the three instruments differed in both shape and amplitude, more so for scenario 2 than scenario 1. In many cases, indices obtained using one instrument differed significantly from the same indices obtained using the other two instruments (but the same leaves), regardless of scenario. The severity of these differences varied between indices. Interpolation was generally ineffective in ‘matching’ the spectra from the various instruments. Care should be exercised when comparing indices generated from spectra measured from different instruments.
