It provides a systematic overview of fundamental theories, geodetic reference systems, and spatial and terrestrial measurement methods, together with the respective modeling techniques. The third edition has been completely revised in order to adequately reflect the tremendous changes which have occured in geodesy in the last twenty years, where space techniques are now the predominante tool for positioning and gravity field determination. Establishment of geodetic control networks has followed these developments, with far-reaching consequences for applied geodesy. High data rates and improved accuracy have increased geodetic contributions to geodynamics research. The present state of geodesy is illustrated by selected examples of instruments and results of geodetic data processing. An extensive reference list supports further studies. This third book of the geoENV series illustrates the new methodological developments in geostatistics, as applied to environmental sciences, which have occurred during the last two years. It also presents a wide variety of practical environmental applications which will be of interest to both researchers and practitioners. The book starts with two keynote papers on hydrogeology and on climatology and atmospheric pollution, followed by forty contributions. The content of this book is foremost practical. The editors have endeavored to compile a set of papers in which the readers could perceive how geostatistics is applied within environmental sciences. A few selected methodological and theoretical contributions are also included. The papers are organised in the following sections: + Air Pollution / Climate; + Environment; + Health / Ecology; + Hydrology; + Methods; + Soil Science / Site Remediation. Presenting applications varying from delineation of hazardous areas, monitoring water quality, space-time modeling of sand beaches, areal rainfall estimation, air pollution monitoring, multivariate conditional simulation, soil texture analysis, fish abundance analysis, tree productivity index estimation, radionuclide migration analysis, wombling procedure, tracer tests modeling, direct sequential co-simulation to stochastic modeling of flow and transport. It discusses important developments in the Earth observation field, and includes substantial new material on application areas, the Envisat mission and new areas of technology such as the internet. The book opens with the basic techniques of satellite geocoding (including the use of GPS and mosaic production) before describing a wide range of algorithms for extraction of information from optical and radar satellite images. It then addresses the derivation of topographic information from space (including the recent shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) followed by an explanation of the added-value obtained through the integrated use of geocoded satellite data in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Practical commercial and scientific applications, such as agriculture, civil engineering, and the oceanographic, atmospheric and cryospheric worlds, are then described in detail. The book reviews recent developments in environmental monitoring and global security such as hazard and disaster monitoring, population dynamics and space missions dedicated to environmental monitoring (such as the Earth Observing System and the European Envisat Mission). Finally, the author draws together all the threads under the generic term of geomatics - addressing cuting-edge developments such as Very High Resolution Imagery (VHR) and the role that satellite data may play in the development of Location Bases Services for the third-generation telecom market.
