[Termes IGN] silicateRésumé : (auteur) Using the unique data sets provided by satellite observations, correlated temporal variations in gravity and magnetic fields over a large area extending from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean have been recently reported. On a timescale of few years to a decade, both field variations may be linked to changes at the top of the core. Here we propose that in addition to the topography generated by the convection in the mantle, the core-mantle boundary (CMB) may be in a dynamic equilibrium state, mainly controlled by a dissolution-crystallization process of the mantle silicate rocks in the liquid alloy of the core. Due to the resulting continuous changes in CMB topography, anomalies of hundreds of nGal and tens of nT yr−2 might be produced by the corresponding mass redistribution and the secondary flow generated by the associated pressure field. Numerical modeling and both gravimetric and magnetic anomaly magnitudes suggest a rate of centimeters per year and a large range of length scales for the changes in the topography at the CMB. [Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (auteur) The analysis of landslide hazard requires continuous and high frequency surface displacement monitoring at numerous and geomorphologically relevant locations. Ground-based geodetic methods (GNSS, tacheometry) allow very accurate and high frequency temporal observations while remote sensing methods (InSAR, terrestrial and satellite photogrammetry, LIDAR) allow spatially distributed observations at high spatial resolution. A single surface deformation monitoring technique coupling all these capabilities is still missing.
The Geocube system has been designed to partly overcome this pitfall by creating a low-cost, flexible, easy to install and wireless GPS receiver. Dense Geocube monitoring networks can be set easily for operational observations. Furthermore, the monitoring of other landslide properties (micro-seismicity, seismic waves) or triggering factors (meteorology, slope hydrology) is possible with the capacity of integrating additional sensors to the Geocube.
This work presents the Geocube system and the results of a field campaign performed during the summer 2012 at the Super-Sauze landslide, southern French Alps, with a network of wireless low-cost GPS. The objective was to assess the performance of the Geocube system in real field monitoring conditions. Our results document the spatial and temporal evolution of the landslide during a period of 40 days. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Three-dimensional visualization of subsurface geological boundaries can help researchers gain a better understanding of complex crustal structures in ancient orogenic belts such as the Grenville Province of Ontario, Canada. In this article, the geological structure of the Parry Sound Domain is visualized using SketchUp, with geological control from a regional gravity survey, Lithoprobe seismic transects line 30 and 31, and surface geological boundaries. The multilobed structure of the Parry Sound Domain is part of a tectonic outlier that lies on top of an orogenic thrust stack. Each of the three lobes exhibits a steeper-dipping west side to depth and a shallowly dipping east side to depth. Prior interpretations of the Parry Sound Domain's subsurface structure are modified on the grounds of a multi-disciplinary approach. Three-dimensional visualization of the Parry Sound Domain will improve the current understanding of the subsurface structure in the south-western Grenville Province. [Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (auteur) In this study, we analyze 25 RADARSAT-2 images from ascending and descending geometries to study the creep rate on the Hayward fault and landslide motions near Berkeley, CA. We applied a coherence optimization technique from polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PolInSAR) to increase the accuracy of the measurements. We resolve 3–5 mm/year of motion along the Hayward fault, in agreement with earlier creep estimates. We identify a potential motion on secondary fault, northeast and parallel to the Hayward fault, which is creeping at a lower rate of ~1.5 mm/year. In addition, we identify a number of landslides along the hills east of the fault that agree with earlier results from advanced interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) analysis and field investigations. We investigate four particular slope instabilities, one of which was marked as moderately active, and three as highly active, by earlier field investigations. The resolved along-hill slope displacement is estimated at ~23 mm/year. Our results demonstrate that PolInSAR is an effective method to increase the interferometric coherence and provide improved resolution of deformation features associated with natural hazards.
