Note de contenu : 1- Introduction

[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (éditeur) This book gathers recent international research on the association between aggressive rainfall and soil loss and landscape degradation. Different contributions explore these complex relationships and highlight the importance of the spatial patterns of precipitation intensity on land flow under erosive storms, with the support of observational and modelling data. This is a large and multifaceted area of research of growing importance that outlines the challenge of protecting land from natural hazards. The increase in the number of high temporal resolution rainfall records together with the development of new modelling capabilities has opened up new opportunities for the use of large-scale planning and risk prevention methods. These new perspectives should no longer be considered as an independent research topic, but should, above all, support comprehensive land use planning, which is at the core of environmental decision-making and operations. Textbooks such as this one demonstrate the significance of how hydrological science can enable tangible progress in understanding the complexity of water management and its current and future challenges. In a context of growing urbanization in mountainous regions, rockfalls represent an increasing risk for local communities and infrastructures. This thesis aims to develop an association of relevant methods for rockfall monitoring. One objective of this thesis is to associate topography measurement and seismological monitoring in order to improve significantly in understanding rockfalls dynamics. This work was mainly carried out in the Chartreuse massif (Isère, French Alps), and in particular two cliffs, Mount Saint-Eynard and Mount Granier. Using photogrammetry, we acquired diachronic Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of the cliffs. Such monitoring enables us to carry out rockfall inventories and occurrence frequency analysis. It also provides us information on rockfall locations and their structural configurations. Combining DEMs and rockfall seismic monitoring allowed us to study relations between rockfall properties (location, volume, geometry, propagation, etc.) and the induced seismic signal. Characteristics of the seismic signal (duration and energy, frequency content, envelope shape) vary depending on the event propagation mode (mass-flow, free-fall, sliding, bouncing …). Selecting events with the same propagation type provides a more accurate characterization of rockfalls properties than when mixing different types of events. For free-falling rockfalls, we analyze the seismic signal of the detachment phases and first impacts. We found relations between seismic signals parameters and rockfalls potential energy, free-fall heights, and volumes. For mass-flow type events, we found a scaling law between rockfalls seismic energy and their volumes. By coupling DEMs and seismic records, we can reconstruct rockfall sequence with accurate timing and correct volume estimations. Controlled block releases were realized in laboratory and on-site to widen our observations on rockfall events. Note de contenu : 1- Slopes dynamics and weathering

[Termes IGN] télémètre laser terrestreRésumé : (auteur) Highly accurate digital surface models are an essential part of change-over-time analyses for monitoring erosion processes. Streambank topography presents a unique challenge for surface mapping due to dense riparian vegetation, canopy cover, and rapidly changing elevation values. The spatial heterogeneity of stream corridors has made the calculation of streambank erosion across larger spatial extents difficult. Contemporary technologies such as terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer new approaches for streambank topography mapping at very high spatial resolutions across varying spatial extents. To evaluate the accuracy of different technologies for streambank topography mapping, we compared streambank surface models derived via a UAV using structure-from-motion and from traditional aerial photogrammetry (i.e. Southwestern Ontario Orthoimagery Project; SWOOP) to that of a TLS benchmark across seven streambank segments. Additional comparisons were made for 22 manually measured stream transects to that of a TLS benchmark. Compared to our benchmark, the UAV-derived streambank surface model was the most accurate with an average root-mean-square-error of 0.104 m. Errors in the UAV surface model were correlated with georeferencing error. The UAV had an average 52% success rate for reconstructing the streambank topography across all field campaigns and was able to map up to 2037 m of streambank in one hour. The streambank surface model derived from traditional aerial photogrammetry and manual transect measurements had average root-mean-square-errors of 0.238 m and 0.274 m respectively. Both aerially-derived surface models tended to over measure elevation values compared to the TLS, whereas manual transect measurements consistently under measured elevation.
