[Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (Auteur) The Likelihood Ratio (LR) Model has been applied as an improvement upon the Frequency Ratio (FR) that computes the ratio of the percentage of the landslide pixels to the percentage of the non-landslide pixels instead of the total number of pixels used in the denominator as in case of the FR. The comparative assessment of the two techniques is made through spatial modelling of GIS vector data using the ArcGIS software. Two different Landslide Information Values were computed for each polygon element of the study area employing the two FR techniques that categorized the study area into five classes of vulnerability using natural breaks (Jenks) technique. Subsequently, vulnerability zonation maps were prepared showing the different levels of landslide vulnerability. The LR technique yielded significantly higher vulnerability assessment accuracy (77%) as compared to the standard FR (71%). [Termes IGN] sous-solRésumé : (Auteur) A novel algorithm that employs modified white top-hat (MWTH) transform with directional edge constraints is proposed in this study to automatically extract ground points from airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) data. MWTH transform can effectively distinguish above-ground objects that are smaller than the window size and higher than the height difference threshold. Directional edge constraints significantly decrease omission errors from protruding ground features. Incorporating MWTH transform and directional edge constraints enables the simultaneous consideration of the size, height, and edge characteristics of lidar data for judging above-ground objects. Experimental results verify that the proposed algorithm exhibits promising performance and high accuracy in various complicated landscapes, even in areas with dramatic changes in elevation. The proposed algorithm has minimal omission and commission error oscillation for different test sites, thereby demonstrating its stability and reliability in a wide range of applications. [Termes IGN] onde sismiqueRésumé : (auteur) The dynamics of Earth’s mantle are not well known. Deciphering mantle flow patterns requires an understanding of the global distribution of mantle density. Seismic tomography has been used to derive mantle density distributions, but converting seismic velocities into densities is not straightforward. Here we show that data from the GOCE (Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer) mission can be used to probe our planet’s deep mass structure. We construct global anomaly maps of the Earth’s gravitational gradients at satellite altitude and use a sensitivity analysis to show that these gravitational gradients image the geometry of mantle mass down to mid-mantle depths. Our maps highlight north–south-elongated gravity gradient anomalies over Asia and America that follow a belt of ancient subduction boundaries, as well as gravity gradient anomalies over the central Pacific Ocean and south of Africa that coincide with the locations of deep mantle plumes. We interpret these anomalies as sinking tectonic plates and convective instabilities between 1,000 and 2,500 km depth, consistent with seismic tomography results. Along the former Tethyan Margin, our data also identify an east–west-oriented mass anomaly likely in the upper mantle. We suggest that by combining gravity gradients with seismic and geodynamic data, an integrated dynamic model for Earth can be achieved.
