[Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) A numerical simulator of satellite microwave radiometric observations of mountainous scenes, developed in a previous study, has been used to predict the relief effects on the measurements of a spaceborne radiometer. For this purpose, the trends of the error due to topography, i.e., the difference between the antenna temperature calculated for a topographically variable surface and that computed for a flat terrain versus the parameters representing the relief, have been analyzed. The analysis has been mainly performed for a mountainous area in the Alps by assuming a simplified land-cover scenario consisting of bare terrain with two roughness conditions (smooth and rough soils) and considering L- and C-bands, i.e., those most suitable for soil moisture retrieval. The results have revealed that the error in satellite microwave radiometric observations is particularly correlated to the mean values of the height and slope of the radiometric pixel, as well as to the standard deviations of the aspect angle and local incidence angle. Both a regression analysis and a neural-network approach have been applied to estimate the error as a function of the parameters representing the relief, using the simulator to build training and test sets. The prediction of the topography effects and their correction in radiometric images have turned out to be feasible, at least for the scenarios considered in this study. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents two decision support plug-ins in free GIS software: ArcGIS Explorer Desktop. The ubiquitous WebGIS Analysis Toolkit for Extensive Resources (uWATER) focuses on providing GIS analysis functions: spatial and attribute queries in the public services tool for users with limited access to commercial GIS software. The interface of uWATER is general enough to support decision-making in numerous management issues in natural resources, economics and agriculture. The uWATER-Pumping Assessment (uWATER-PA) toolkit, on the other hand, is an extended package targeting the specific environmental issue of groundwater pumping impacts. The uWATER-PA package is an excellent alternative to evaluating complex groundwater pumping assessment issues before investing significant time, labor, and funds in monitoring and detailed scientific study. It incorporates simulation of the physics of groundwater flow and user interaction into GIS software. A graphical user interface makes both data entry and interpretation of results intuitive to non-technical individuals. Results are presented as colored drawdown maps and can be saved in GIS format for future dissemination. The impact of drawdown on existing wells can be characterized and mapped, through the use of uWATER's spatial query capabilities and the drawdown maps generated by uWATER-PA. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) In the forward model [L-band microwave emission of the biosphere (L-MEB)] used in the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity level-2 retrieval algorithm, modeling of the roughness effects is based on a simple semiempirical approach using three main “roughness” model parameters: HR, QR, and NR. In many studies, the two parameters QR and NR are set to zero. However, recent results in the literature showed that this is too approximate to accurately simulate the microwave emission of the rough soil surfaces at L-band. To investigate this, a reanalysis of the PORTOS-93 data set was carried out in this paper, considering a large range of roughness conditions. First, the results confirmed that QR could be set to zero. Second, a refinement of the L-MEB soil model, considering values of NR for both polarizations (namely, NRV and NRH), improved the model accuracy. Furthermore, simple calibrations relating the retrieved values of the roughness model parameters HR and (NRH - NRV) to the standard deviation of the surface height were developed. This new calibration of L-MEB provided a good accuracy (better than 5 K) over a large range of soil roughness and moisture conditions of the PORTOS-93 data set. Conversely, the calibrations of the roughness effects based on the Choudhury approach, which is still widely used, provided unrealistic values of surface emissivities for medium or large roughness conditions.
