[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Quantification of regional methane (CH4) gas emission in the paddy fields is critical under climate warming. Mechanism models generally require numerous parameters while empirical models are too coarse. Based on the mechanism and structure of the widely used model CH4MOD, a GIS-based Regional CH4 Emission Calculation (GRMC) method was put forward by introducing multiple sources of remote sensing images, including MOD09A1, MOD11A2, MOD15A2H as well as local water management standards. The stress of soil moisture condition (f(water)) on CH4 emissions was quantified by calculating the redox potential (Eh) from days after flooding or falling dry. The f(water)-t curve was calculated under different exogenous organic matter addition. Combining the f(water)-t curve with local water management standards, the seasonal variation of f(water) was obtained. It was proven that f(water) was effective in reflecting the regulation role of soil moisture condition. The GRMC was tested at four Eddy Covariance (EC) sites: Nanchang (NC) in China, Twitchell (TWT) in the USA, Castellaro (CAS) in Italy and Cheorwon (CRK) in Korea and has been proven to well track the seasonal dynamics of CH4 emissions with R2 ranges of 0.738–0.848, RMSE ranges of 31.94–149.22 mg C/m2d and MBE ranges of −66.42- -14.79 mg C/m2d. The parameters obtained in Nanchang (NC) site in China were then applied to the Ganfu Plain Irrigation System (GFPIS), a typical rice planting area of China, to analyse the spatial-temporal variations of CH4 emissions. The total CH4 emissions of late rice in the GFPIS from 2001 to 2013 was in the range of 14.47–20.48 (103 t CH4-C). Ts caused spatial variation of CH4 production capacity, resulting in the spatial variability of CH4 emissions. Overall, the GRMC is effective in obtaining CH4 emissions from rice fields on a regional scale. Yet, less optimal fixed-width approach is still largely used, likely because of its simple design and implementation. We examined the efficiency of varying-width buffer zones based on depth-to-water (DTW) index in protecting stream riparian plant communities. We further compared the economic costs of DTW-based buffer to commonly used 5, 10 and 15 m fixed-width buffers. We also included an additional buffer based on a combination of DTW and erosion risk (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation, RUSLE) into these comparisons to see the extent and cost of a buffer that should maximize the protection of the linked aquatic environment. Plant species richness increased with increasing soil moisture and species preferring moist conditions, nutrient-rich soils and high pH were clearly more abundant adjacent to stream in areas with high predicted soil moisture than in dry areas. Differences in species richness were paralleled by differences in community composition and higher beta diversity of plant communities in wet than in dry riparian areas. There were also several indicator species typical for moist and nutrient-rich soils for wet riparian areas. Riparian buffer zones based on DTW were on average larger than 15 m wide fixed-width buffers. However, the cost for DTW-based buffer was lower than for fixed-width buffer zones when the cost was normalized by area. Simulated selective cutting decreased the costs, but cutting possibilities were variable among streams and depended on the characteristics of forest stands. Our results thus suggest a high potential of DTW in predicting wet areas and variable-width buffer zones based on these areas in the protection of riparian biodiversity and stream ecosystems. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) This study focused on monitoring the water status of vegetation and soil by exploiting the synergy of optical and microwave satellite data with the aim of improving the knowledge of water cycle in cultivated lands in Egyptian Delta and Tunisian areas. Environmental analysis approaches based on optical and synthetic aperture radar data were carried out to set up the basis for future implementation of practical and cost-effective methods for sustainable water use in agriculture. Long-term behaviors of vegetation indices were thus analyzed between 2000 and 2018. By using SAR data from Sentinel-1, an Artificial Neural Network-based algorithm was implemented for estimating soil moisture and monthly maps for 2018 have been generated to be compared with information derived from optical indices. Moreover, a novel drought severity index was developed and applied to available data. The index was obtained by combining vegetation soil difference index, derived from optical data, and soil moisture content derived from SAR data. The proposed index was found capable of complementing optical and microwave sensitivity to drought-related parameters, although ground data are missing for correctly validating the results, by capturing drought patterns and their temporal evolution better than indices based only on microwave or optical data. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Mediterranean riparian forests have been altered by past use and are also negatively impacted by climate and hydrological droughts. However, we lack data on their historical changes in extent combined with multi-proxy, long-term assessments of tree growth and leaf gas exchange responses to climate, drought severity and river flow. These evaluations must also consider their current stand structure and the amount of lying deadwood which are proxies of river dynamics and forest maturity. To fill these research gaps, we studied four riparian tree species (Populus alba, Populus nigra, Fraxinus angustifolia and Ulmus minor) inhabiting a Mediterranean riparian forest located in north-eastern Spain. We quantified and analyzed: stand structure; lying deadwood; radial growth; relationships between growth, climate variables, the SPEI drought index and river flow; stable C (δ13C) and O (δ18O) isotopes in wood of P. alba, P. nigra and F. angustifolia; and earlywood anatomy in F. angustifolia. Mature sites were dominated by P. nigra and F. angustifolia and showed the highest amount of decayed lying deadwood. Radial growth was reduced by drought and low spring-summer river flow. We found the highest growth responses to 3- (P. nigra, r = 0.62; P. alba, r = 0.46) or 12-month SPEI (F. angustifolia, r = 0.54; U. minor, r = 0.53). The coordinated decrease in δ18O and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUE) in P. alba and P. nigra could involve an increase in stomatal conductance rate. P. alba and P. nigra were more enriched in δ18O than F. angustifolia, suggesting the former used more enriched shallow groundwater in dry periods. The F. angustifolia WUE and P. nigra δ18O series were positively and negatively correlated with the SPEI, respectively. The F. angustifolia hydraulic diameter decreased in response to drought, whereas its vessel density and WUE were positively associated. Overall, P. nigra and F. angustifolia were the species most responsive to drought.
