[Termes IGN] sémiologie graphiqueRésumé : (auteur) The impetus induced by the development of multi-scale, multi-style maps calls for thinking our resources and protocols with greater interoperability. In the field of toponymy, this requires, in particular, thinking of categories and their structuring with more granularity. Assuming that typography, as a device for visualizing toponyms, is a tool whose potential is still under-exploited, we ask ourselves how the field of typographic design can improve our understanding of toponymic categories and help to structure them in a multi-scale logic. The approach adopted to answer this question is to analyse several existing maps to find good and bad practices. We identified different styles of place names and we built a typology of text features in the surveyed maps. The surveyed maps are the 1 : 35 000 scale, in IGN-France, OSM and GoogleMaps portals. [Termes IGN] territoireRésumé : (auteur) This chapter illustrates the importance of territorial representation by referring to a substrate closer to the discipline: cartographic modeling. It presents the main issues with embedding territorial representation and territorial dynamics in simulation models. The chapter depicts scientific practices and illustrates them with select model examples. It proposes a singular and reproducible modeling strategy, which aims specifically at describing a territorial system and its evolution. This strategy relies on multi‐modeling or incremental modeling. The chapter provides a presentation of the limits and opportunities of this approach, with a discussion of its applicability and interest to different case studies. It also provides the reader–modeler–geographer with a guide to represent territorial complexity in a progressive and well‐reasoned manner, in order to develop a reproducible territorial model and evaluation protocol. [Termes IGN] couleur impriméeRésumé : (auteur) Color is the result of the visual perception of an energy source. It is described by its physical characteristics, mainly as a tridimensional variable modeled into a color space. Online tools exist to facilitate the use of color schemes to design a color palette, for artists, web designers, statisticians, etc. Colors in maps and visualizations must be combined to promote the visual hierarchy and harmony, balancing legibility, perceptual processing, and aesthetics. Color is a powerful visual variable and requires understanding the perception of color relationships. Existing color schemes are very useful to select a suitable color palette. As color is not experienced similarly across all map readers, issues about real-world connotations, conventions, specific color contrasts, and adaptation to color visual deficiencies and devices, are also to be taken into account when designing a color palette. This entry describes the main guidelines regarding color theory and related design practices as applied to map or geovisualization design.
