[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) This chapter describes some of the factors which have contributed to this recent increase in cartographic research: upon this background, and from the point of view of map design, a review is given of some of the research directions and questions which seemed to have had great potential for providing benefits to the map design process. From this review, it would appear that the products of this research have been differentially beneficial to the map design process. It is suggested that map designers may have far less control over the flow of information from maps than we felt heretofore. If such is the case, then perhaps less time should be spent in determining such things as levels of contrast discrimination among various map elements in task-specific situations. The implications of this for discussions and further research in cartographic communication would appear to be significant.
