[Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (auteur) This paper addresses the problem of determining the location of a ground level image by using georeferenced overhead imagery. The input query image is assumed to be given with no metadata and the content of the image is to be matched to a priori constructed reference representations. The semantic breakdown of the content of the query image is provided through manual labeling; however, all processing involving the reference imagery and matching are fully automated. In this paper, a volumetric representation is proposed to fuse different modalities of overhead imagery and construct a 3D reference world. Attributes of this reference world such as orientation of the world surfaces, types of land cover, depth order of fronto-parallel surfaces are indexed and matched to the attributes of the surfaces manually marked on the query image. An exhaustive but highly parallelizable matching scheme is proposed and the performance is evaluated on a set of query images located in a coastal region in Eastern United States. The performance is compared to a baseline region reduction algorithm and to a landmark existence matcher that uses a 2D representation of the reference world. The proposed 3D geo-localization framework performs better than the 2D approach for 75 % of the query images. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) In forested mountainous areas, the road location and characterization are invaluable inputs for various purposes such as forest management, wood harvesting industry, wildfire protection and fighting. Airborne topographic lidar has become an established technique to characterize the Earth surface. Lidar provides 3D point clouds allowing for fine reconstruction of ground topography while preserving high frequencies of the relief: fine Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) is the key product.
This paper addresses the problem of road detection and characterization in forested environments over large scales (>1000 km2). For that purpose, an efficient pipeline is proposed, which assumes that main forest roads can be modeled as planar elongated features in the road direction with relief variation in orthogonal direction. DTMs are the only input and no complex 3D point cloud processing methods are involved. First, a restricted but carefully designed set of morphological features is defined as input for a supervised Random Forest classification of potential road patches. Then, a graph is built over these candidate regions: vertices are selected using stochastic geometry tools and edges are created in order to fill gaps in the DTM created by vegetation occlusion. The graph is pruned using morphological criteria derived from the input road model. Finally, once the road is located in 2D, its width and slope are retrieved using an object-based image analysis. We demonstrate that our road model is valid for most forest roads and that roads are correctly retrieved (>80%) with few erroneously detected pathways (10–15%) using fully automatic methods. The full pipeline takes less than 2 min per km2 and higher planimetric accuracy than 2D existing topographic databases are achieved. Compared to these databases, additional roads can be detected with the ability of lidar sensors to penetrate the understory. In case of very dense vegetation and insufficient relief in the DTM, gaps may exist in the results resulting in local incompleteness (∼15%).Numéro de notice : A2016-137 Affiliation des auteurs : LASTIG MATIS+Ext (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2015.12.002 Date de publication en ligne : 29/12/2015 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2015.12.002 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=80309

[Termes IGN] TanzanieRésumé : (Auteur) Estimating tropical biomass is critical for establishment of conservation inventories and landscape monitoring. However, monitoring biomass in a complex and dynamic environment using traditional methods is challenging. Recently, biomass estimates based on remotely sensed data and ecological variables have shown great potential. The present study explored the utility of remotely sensed data and topo-edaphic factors to improve biomass estimation in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania. Twenty-nine vegetation indices were calculated from RapidEye data, while topo-edaphic factors were taken from field measurements. Results showed that using topo-edaphic variables or vegetation indices, biomass could be predicted with an R2 of 0.4. A combination of topo-edaphic variables and vegetation indices improved the prediction accuracy to an R2 of 0.6. Results further showed a decrease in biomass estimates from 1162 ton ha−1 in 1980 to 285.38 ton ha−1 in 2012. This study demonstrates the value of combining remotely sensed data with topo-edaphic variables in biomass estimation. Cet article présente une approche traitant des données lidar afin d’extraire de manière automatique, fiable et sur de grandes étendues, la desserte forestière en zones de pente. Les avantages et inconvénients de cette technique, tant qualitativement que quantitativement, sont précisés.
