Modelling of agriculture in this region and similar locations depends on the availability and quality of satellite and ground data for agro-climate variables. We evaluated tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) multi-satellite preparation analysis (TMPA) precipitation, atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS) surface air temperature, and AIRS relative air humidity (RH). A significant bias was found within the temperature and RH products and no bias but an insufficient rain event detection skill in the precipitation product (probability of detection 0.3). A linear correction of the temperature product removed the bias as well as lowered the root mean square deviation (RMSD). The bias-corrections for RH led to increased RMSD or worse correlation. For precipitation, the correlation between the satellite product and ground data improved if cumulative precipitation or only precipitation during the growing season was used. [Termes IGN] Kerala (Inde ; état)Résumé : (Auteur) The study areas Tikovil and Payppara sub-watersheds of Meenachil river cover 158.9 and 111.9 km2, respectively. These watersheds are parts of Western Ghats, which is an ecologically sensitive region. The drainage network of the sub-watersheds was delineated using SOI topographical maps on 1:50,000 scale using the Arc GIS software. The stream orders were calculated using the method proposed by Strahler's (1964). The drainage network shows that the terrain exhibits dendritic to sub-dendritic drainage pattern. Stream order ranges from the fifth to the sixth order. Drainage density varies between 1.69 and 2.62 km/km2. The drainage texture of the drainage basins are 2.3 km–1 and 6.98 km–1 and categorized as coarse to very fine texture. Stream frequency is low in the case of Payappara sub-watershed (1.78 km–2). Payappara sub-watershed has the highest constant of channel maintenance value of 0.59 indicating much fewer structural disturbances and fewer runoff conditions. The form factor value varies in between 0.42 and 0.55 suggesting elongated shape formed for Payappara sub-watershed and a rather more circular shape for Tikovil sub-watershed. The mean bifurcation ratio (3.5) indicates that both the sub-watersheds are within the natural stream system. Hence from the study it can be concluded that GIS techniques prove to be a competent tool in morphometric analysis. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper is a review of various research works in France on airborne LiDAR applied to the monitoring of natural environment. Firstly, it presents applications based on the use of very high-resolution digital surface models derived from LiDAR data. The use of such models is quickly expanding on all the fields related to the environment. This article also discusses more specific research on signal processing and accuracy. Part of this work summarizes papers that were published in the "Revue Française de Photogrammétrie et de Télédétection (RFPT)", the French Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, following two national conferences organized in Montpellier (2006) and Le Mans (2009) in order to invite researchers using LiDAR in several fields of application to initiate technical and scientific exchanges. We also provide an update on ongoing research and instrument developments in France. [Termes IGN] visibilitéRésumé : (Auteur) When a car drives in mountainous regions, the views based on conventional perspective projection often suffer from features of interest being occluded. We propose a method for generating disocclusion views in mountainous regions. The terrain is segmented to build a potential set of occluders; and then an optimized viewpoint is determined, and elevations are rearranged. To obtain a smooth deformed terrain, a smooth displacement function is introduced to deform the level-of-detail terrain models. Compared with previous methods, the merit of this study lies in automatically generating disocclusion views with temporal coherence while keeping the details of the deformed terrain the same as the original terrain. Experiments performed on the 4098 pixel x 4098 pixel mountainous terrain landscape prove that the disocclusion views can achieve 42 to 58 frames/second. Moreover, the shapes of the features of interest on the driving route without occlusion and the spatial configuration of geographical landmarks in its neighborhood can be easily recognized. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a new approach to multiscale segmentation of satellite multispectral imagery using edge information. The Canny edge detector is applied to perform multispectral edge detection. The detected edge features are then utilized in a multiscale segmentation loop, and the merge procedure for adjacent image objects is controlled by a separability criterion that combines edge information with segmentation scale. The significance of the edge is measured by adjacent partitioned regions to perform edge assessment. The present method is based on a half-partition structure, which is composed of three steps: single edge detection, separated pixel grouping, and significant feature calculation. The spectral distance of the half-partitions separated by the edge is calculated, compared, and integrated into the edge information. The results show that the proposed approach works well on satellite multispectral images of a coastal area.
