[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) This letter presents an experiment carried out in Toulouse in May 2004 to study the spectral variability and bidirectional reflectance behaviour of urban materials. The measurements were carried out at a 20 cm spatial resolution in the visible and near‐infrared (350–2500 nm). These measurements allow quantification of three main types of reflectance spatial variability. In addition to these in situ experiments, the bidirectional properties of urban material samples were studied in the laboratory with a goniometer. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Combining data from different sensors for visual or classification analysis is a common task in remote sensing. The first step is normally to register the images which may be considered geometric integration; the accuracy of this step is important to create a valuable final hybrid image. This paper addresses geometric integration and introduces a new method for automatically registering two dissimilar images, such as, a radar image and an optical image with high accuracy. Pre-registration of the two images to within a specified tolerance is required. In our examples, this tolerance is up to 17 pixels (at the scale of the higher resolution image) and may be achieved by, for example, visually located control points. The described approach then uses large-scale edge gradient contours in a process that automatically locates candidate control points on the contours. The points are selected using a cost function that measures the degree of match between all possible pairs of points. Numerous control points (typically around 50 pairs) are found from matched pairs of gradient contours and use in a global, rubber sheet, polynomial warp to refine the registration. This approach is applied to register a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image (ERS2, 12.5 m pixels) and a Thematic Mapper (TM) optical image (Landsat-5, 28.5 m pixels) automatically. Several examples with different scene content are shown to validate the approach and discussed in terms of residual registration error and processing efficiency. [Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (Auteur) The interference between two radar images, acquired from approximately the same location, has a number of uses. In particular, the literature abounds with examples of coherent change detection (CCD) and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) uses that, respectively, enable the detection of small changes and the extraction of terrain elevation. In almost all of these examples, collections have been deliberately constrained so that they have almost identical collection geometries. Details of the variation in geometry have been analyzed extensively but generally only with respect to variation in the mean grazing angle. Much of this variation is due to the angular variation in the scene reflectivity; however, when collection geometries differ in other respects, the reduction in performance cannot be entirely explained by angular variations alone. This paper identifies a source of performance degradation when the collection geometries are different for scenes containing local relief. The error is due to approximations during image formation that both the collection geometry and the terrain are flat. The effect of these errors is derived as a blurring kernel to the true scene. The impact of the blurring is then assessed in the interferometric case and broken into common and differential blurring terms to facilitate the impact of some special cases and to explain why the parallel-pass geometry works as well as it does even though the true three-dimensional nature of the collection and the ground are ignored. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) This paper analyzes the signal measured by optical remote sensors when acquiring data over a shaded part of an urban scene. The signal is much lower for this kind of target than for others because there is no direct downward irradiance. Here, a simple urban scene is considered with a shaded area. The signal observed by a high spatial resolution satellite sensor over an ordinary panchromatic band (500-700 nm) is computed thanks to a radiative transfer code [advanced modeling of the atmospheric radiative transfer for inhomogeneous surfaces (Amartis)] capable of dealing with ground topography and heterogeneity. The signal is analyzed, and it appears that environmental effects play a significant role. Moreover, because of the scattering that occurs at shorter wavelengths, it is also shown that a widening of the band to 440 nm sharpens the difference between signals coming from two different ground types (for whose the difference of reflectance is constant and equal to 0.1) by about 10%. This demonstrates that the band widening may be beneficial to observation in shadow, mainly because of scattering effects. A more realistic scene is also considered, in which each part is associated with realistic spectral properties. This simply shows the importance of the thematic in the choice of band, as it determines the effect of the widening.
