[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Distance is a fundamental concept in spatial sciences. Spatial distance is a very important parameter to measure the relative positions between spatial objects and to indicate the degree of similarity between neighbouring objects. Indeed, spatial distance plays an important role in many areas such as neighbourhood analysis, structural similarity measure, image (or object) matching, clustering analysis, and so on. In this paper, existing computational models for the distance between spatial objects are evaluated and their problems pointed out ; then, the concept of the Hausdorff distance is introduced as a metric indicator for different types of spatial objects. This distance is extended to a uniform representation by the introduction of the quantile, leading to the extended Hausdorff distance. Indeed, the so-called extended Hausdorff distance is, in fact, a kind of metric characterized by the minimum distance, the Hausdorff distance, and the median Hausdorff distance. The first two can be used for measuring the dispersion and the last one for measuring the central tendency of the distance distribution between spatial objects. A method termed the b.epsi-buffer has been proposed for the computation of the median Hausdorff distance. Finally, potential applications are discussed. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate time registration, georeferencing, and instantaneous feature extraction are important challenges for real-time mapping systems. The Geodetic Engineering Laboratory (TOPO) at the EPFL has designed a mobile platform to automatically determine the geometry of the road centerline: the Photobus. Our system fully exploits the concept of direct georeferencing by combining navigation data with video sequences grabbed by a downward-pointing camera. This paper presents the realization of the authors' vision of real-time mapping that encompasses a mobile acquisition platform dedicated for a well-defined task. To sustain the high performance requirements of such a data-critical application, the use of custom-made software based on open-source libraries is a preferred approach of implementation. In this context, we investigate the suitability of using a close-to-nadiral CMOS camera to extract the road geometry with a reliable and almost latency-free methodology. We will first focus on the frame-grabbing process for which an open-source approach guarantees the versatile integration of the camera into the mapping platform. The second part of the paper discusses the process of extracting and georeferencing features of interest in an automatic manner. To open perspectives, we will investigate an extension of the surveying capabilities of the Photobus with stereovision. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) A new method is illustrated for describing the characteristics of urban pattern changes over different time periods. This method employs vector geometry, paired centroids, shared boundary lines, and overlain polygons. Three new statistics are proposed for characterizing local polygon feature changes in quantity, shape, and size. These statistics are standardized, based on conventional theories from urban geography such as directional concentric zones and user-designated corridors to document both regional and global patterns of land-use change. This method is used to analyse land-use changes in metropolitan Detroit between 1990 and 2000. The Detroit case study indicates that the CTSPA statistics are effective in describing urban spatial pattern changes and in characterizing the evolution of discrete urban landscapes over selected periods. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Thin plate spline interpolation is a widely used approach to generate a digital elevation model (DEM) from contour lines and scattered data. In practice, contour maps are scanned and vectorized, and after resampling in the target grid resolution, interpolation is performed. In this paper we demonstrate the limited accuracy of this process, and propose a high-resolution processing method (without vectorization) that ensures maximum utilization of information in the source data. First, we discuss the mathematical background of thin plate spline interpolation, and explain the multigrid relaxation principle used to speed up convergence. After, we will show why fine tuning is necessary, especially when contour lines and elevation points are processed at the same time. Finally, our own contour thinning method that produces a significant reduction of elevation bias is described.
