[Termes IGN] traitement du signalRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a method for determining the time-of-arrival (TOA) of the ground component of a laser altimetry return signal. The proposed method takes advantage of the fact that the ground component or ground return is approximately Gaussian shaped and occurs at the end of the return signal. In particular, the method exploits the well-known result that the TOA of a known signal in white Gaussian noise can be estimated using matched filtering. An important feature of the method is that it addresses the problem of overlap between ground and vegetation returns. Simulations using synthetic data indicate that the proposed method provides excellent estimates and greatly outperforms a conventional method. It is anticipated that the method will be applicable to laser altimetry applications where the ground return can be assumed to have an approximately known shape. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser terrestreRésumé : (Auteur) There is a potentially strong demand for detailed 3D spatial data of urban areas. A groundbased laser range scanner is one of the promising devices to acquire range images of urban 3D objects. In this paper, the authors propose an automated registration method of multiple overlapping range images for the reconstruction of 3D urban objects. Registration is achieved in two steps, pairwise registration and multiple registration assuming that one rotating axis of a laser range scanner is almost vertical. At first, pairwise registration determines the approximate values of four transformation parameters, a horizontal rotation angle and three translation parameters of a pair of neighboring range images. Then through multiple registration, the transformation parameters of all range images are adjusted using the approximate values so as to minimize the total errors. An outdoor experiment was conducted registering 42 range images to construct a 3D model of a building on the campus of the University of Tokyo. The accuracy of the model was examined using a 1:500 scale digital map and GPS measured locations of the viewpoints. The efficiency and accuracy of the registration method is demonstrated in this paper. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laserRésumé : (Auteur) Reflectorless distance measurement (RML) has over the recent past become common in surveying. Here, what is being measured is important and should be considered more carefully than traditional ways distance measurement. A focusing optical system was designed to adapt RML to surveying requirements. RML also has potential for new applications by user-designed tergets. The author presents characteristics of RLM and considerations for the design of provisional and application-oriented tergets. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) The Wide-Angle Airborne Laser Ranging System (WA-ALRS) is an instrument developed at IGN with the aim of measuring land subsidence with sub-cm accuracy. The instrument provides range measurements that are used to estimate the co-ordinates of a ground-based network of cube-corner retroreflectors (CCRs). Millimeter accuracy on relative radial co-ordinates has been demonstrated in a ground-based experiment and centimeter accuracy has been obtained in a recent airborne experiment. The main limitation in the latter experiment came from the low link budget at longer distances. In this paper, we analyze the performance expected with two different detector modules (avalanche photodiodes with amplifiers). Laboratory measurements are used to characterize detector parameters and estimate ranging accuracy. Numerical simulations predict a 2-3 mm accuracy in the vertical co-ordinate with these detectors combined to a 2-km aircraft altitude, a 20 laser beam divergence, a 250-m CCR separation and ~ 103 measurements per CCR.
