[Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with terrestrial long-range laser scanner applications, gives an overview of topics related to this methodology, provides real and tested information about laser scanners, and analyses the reflectance of different materials. After positive results obtained during an experimental test executed in Bologna (Italy) on March 2005, the INGV (Bologna, Italy) and CODEVINTEC srl (Milan, Italy) planned a mission over the Mount Vesuvius volcano (Naples, Italy). For the first time, a wide crater area composed of low reflectivity materials was completely surveyed, creating a very accurate digital surface model. In this work, a long-range laser scanner was used to create high-precision surveys that demonstrated very low residual values in scan comparisons. The results lead to the conclusion that this methodology is suitable for surface monitoring proposals. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Attempting to review all the products and services being offered on the stands of over 500 companies and organisations at the INTERGEO 2006 trade fair would require a squad of reviewers and occupy a whole issue of this magazine. Thus, when asked by the publishers to contribute a review based on my visit to INTERGEO, it seemed best instead to concentrate on a single well-defined area where a lot of activity was taking place at the fair. The most obvious area for someone with my interests was airborne laser scanning. Here quite a number of interesting new products and technical developments were to be seen, together with the provision of growing number of related services. So I have tried to review this particular area under two main headings - (i) system suppliers ; and (ii) service providers. [Termes IGN] vibrationRésumé : (Auteur) The distribution of laser pulses within conifer forest trees and canopies are examined by varying the rate of laser pulse emission and the inherent laser pulse properties (laser pulse energy, pulse width, pulse length, and roll-over or trigger time). In this study, an Optech, Inc. ALTM 3100 airborne lidar is used, emitting pulses at 50 kHz and 100 kHz, allowing for changes in laser pulse characteristics while also keeping all other survey parameters equal. We found that:
1. Pulses and associated characteristics emitted at 50 kHz penetrated further into the canopy than 100 kHz for a significant number of individual trees.
2. At tall tree plots with no understory, pulses emitted at 50 kHz penetrated further into the canopy than 100 kHz for a significant number of plots.
3. For plots with significant understory and shorter trees, pulses emitted at 100 kHz penetrated further into the canopy than 50 kHz. We suspect that this may be due, in part, to canopy openness.
Laser pulse energy and character differences associated with different laser pulse emission frequencies are likely a contributing factor in laser pulse penetration through the canopy to the ground surface. Efforts to understand laser pulse character influences on canopy returns are important as biomass and vegetation structure models derived from lidar are increasingly adopted.
