[Termes IGN] résolution multipleRésumé : (Auteur) Multi-observation of satellite remote-sensing provides the ability to achieve a higher spatial resolution image. Based on the relation between sensors of different spatial resolution, this paper presents a multi-observation in spatial called subpixel-shifted multi-observation, to acquire a more accurate image of higher spatial resolution than the original observations. In this kind of observation, the same area on the ground is observed repeatedly with a spatial resolution in a subpixel shifted way. All the acquired observation images are combined into a higher resolution image. This formulated as a super-resolution equation. When comparing the existing super-resolution algorithms, we find that the Iterative Back-Projection (IBP) method suggested by Peleg et al. is an appropriate and effective method for solving this problem. Based on IBP, a pratical implementation is presented. Computer experiments on remote sensing images and error analysis show its effectiveness. Some problems, such as back projection, undersampling, and fusion of observed samples, are discussed further. The resultant image from this method has both better quality and higher spatial resolution than the original observation. [Termes IGN] image SeawifsRésumé : (Auteur) Multitemporal and multisatellite studies or comparisons between satellite data and local ground measurements require nowadays precise and automatic geometric correction of satellite images. This paper presents a fully automatic geometric correction system capable of georeferencing satellite images with high accuracy. An orbital prediction model, which provides initial earth locations, is combined with the proposed automatic contour-matching technique. This combination allows correcting the low-frequency error component, mainly due to timing and orbital model errors, as well as the high-frequency error component, due to variations in the spacecraft's attitude. The approach aims at exploiting the maximum reliable information in the image to guide the matching algorithm. The contour-matching process has three main steps: 1) estimation of the gradient energy map (edges) and detection of the cloudless (reliable) areas; 2) initialization of the contours positions; 3) estimation of the transformation parameters (affine model) using a contour optimization approach. Three different robust and automatic algorithms are proposed for optimization, and their main features are discussed. Finally, the performance of the three proposed algorithms is assessed using a new error estimation technique applied to Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), Sea-viewing Wide Field of view Sensor (SeaWiFS), and multisensor AVHRR-SeaWiFS imagery. [Termes IGN] résolution multipleRésumé : (Auteur) Many cases of remote sensing classification present complicated patterns that cannot he identified on the basis of spectral data alone, but require contextual methods that base class discrimination on the spatial relationships between the individual pixel and local and global configurations of neighboring pixels. However, the use of contextual classification is still limited by critical issues, such as complexity and problem dependency. We propose here a contextual classification strategy for object recognition in remote sensing images in an attempt to solve recognition tasks operatively. The salient characteristics of the strategy are the definition of a multiresolution feature extraction procedure exploiting human perception and the use of soft neural classification based on the multilayer perceptron model. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the methodology, one in an easily controlled domain using synthetic images, the other two in real domains involving builtup pattern recognition in panchromatic aerial photographs and high-resolution satellite images. [Termes IGN] terrainRésumé : (Auteur) This paper investigates the combination of metric aerial photography and near-infrared (NIR) videography data to improve the design of field-survey sampling frameworks. Spatial data collection can contribute up to 80% of the cost of deploying a Geographic Information System (GIS) based Decision Support System (DSS). The use of remotely sensed information, field survey using differential Global Positioning System (dGPS) and geostatistical interpolation methods maximises data quality for a given rate of sampling.
Medium-format colour aerial photography and NIR videography were orthorectified to the national map base and mosaiced using ERDAS Imagine. The green and red layers of the aerial photography were combined with the NIR videography to form a false-colour composite image. Two sampling strategies were tested. The first stratified sampling on a per field basis, creating four points per hectare, randomly located within each field. The second strategy used the remotely sensed information to identify within-field variability classes for each field, using red-green difference or normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) models. These variability classes were used as a sub-stratification framework with each class sampled at the same rate of 4 per hectare. For both strategies the sample points were generated within ESRI ArcView and were located in the field using dGPS. Maps of stone content were created using geostatistical methods and validated against samples collected on a 100 metre grid. The amount and rate of this land conversion affects local and regional ecosystems, climate, biogeochemistry, as well as food production. The main objective of the research described in this paper is to improve understanding of the methodological and validation requirements for mapping urban land cover over large areas from coarse resolution remotely sensed data. A technique called boosting is used to improve supervised classification accuracy and provides a means to integrate moDis data with the Dmsp nighttime lights data set and gridded population data. Results for North America indicate that fusion of these three data types improves urban classification results by resolving confusion between urban and other classes that occurs when any one of the data sets is used by itself. Traditional measures of accuracy assessment as well as new, mapletbased methods demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology of creating maps of cities at continental scales.
