[Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) The wavelet-based scheme for the fusion of multispectral (MS) and panchromatic (PAN) imagery has become quite popular due to its ability to preserve the spectral fidelity of the MS imagery while improving its spatial quality. This is important if the resultant imagery is used for automatic classification. Wavelet-based fusion results depend on the number of decomposition levels applied in the wavelet transform. Too few decomposition levels result in poor spatial quality fused images. On the other hand, too many levels reduce the spectral similarity between the original MS and the pan-sharpened images. If the shift-invariant wavelet transform is applied, each excessive decomposition level results in a large computational penalty. Thus, the choice of the number of decomposition levels is significant. In this paper, PAN and MS image pairs with different resolution ratios were fused using the shift-invariant wavelet transform, and the optimal decomposition levels were determined for each resolution ratio. In general, it can be said that the fusion of images with larger resolution ratios requires a higher number of decomposition levels. This paper provides the practitioner an understanding of the tradeoffs associated with the computational demand and the spatial and spectral quality of the wavelet-based fusion algorithm as a function of the number of decomposition levels. [Termes IGN] satellite agileRésumé : (Auteur) The Pleiades-HR system, of which the first platform of the constellation shall be ready for launch by early 2009, is the next generation of high resolution optical sensor satellites developed by CNES, the French space agency. With its ability to provide photogrammetrists with instantaneous colour image stereo-pairs of 20km swath and 70cm resolution acquired with B/H ratios ranging from 0.15 to 2, the very agile and precisely pointing Pleiades platforms should open in many countries a new era for the updating of high scale maps, by probably avoiding heavy aerial survey campaigns in many cases. In the framework of a cooperation agreement between CNES and IGN-France, designed to prepare an operational use of these images, several experimentations and simulations are being carried out, in order to verify the ability of the system to fulfil the technical and operational requirements of the map-making processes, in comparison with those presently based on digital aerial photography. Among others, present studies particularly focus on : 1- the geometric and radiometric quality assessment of the planned system products (sensor level, orthoimages and mosaics) ; 2- the capacity assessment of the Pleiades-HR constellation to meet the IGN-F cartographic mission needs in terms of image volume for the coverage of the national territory, whether in monoscopic or stereoscopic mode. After an overview of the main characteristics of the Pleiades-HR system, the paper aims at presenting the first results of these studies, which will be of great importance, together with the economic side, in the decision process of IGN-France to transfer, or not, part of the supplying of fresh images from the aerial source to the satellite source. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the feasibility of integrating GPS and remote sensing data into a GIS database through rectification of satellite images of both urban and rural areas using uncorrected GPS coordinates. A GPS receiver was used to log the coordinates of 25 ground control points (GCPs) in a rural area and 20 GCPs in an urban area. Their coordinates were also read from topographic maps. Both sets of coordinates were used to rectify Landsat TM, and SPOT panchromatic (PAN) and multispectral (XL) images. It is found that none of the GPS coordinates are able to achieve an acceptable accuracy level of integration unless some inaccurate GCPs are excluded. The percentage of useable GCPs varies from less than 50 to nearly 90, depending on the spatial resolution of the image and the ease of GCP identification. On average, the difficulty in identifying GCPs on the ground and the image degrades integration accuracy by up to one pixel. [Termes IGN] transformation linéaire directeRésumé : (Auteur) Very high resolution optical space images are coming more and more into competition to classical aerial images making them more important for mapping projects. The orientation process of the dominating CCD-line scanner images taken from space is quite different from the orientation of perspective photos. Different image products like nearly original images and images projected to a plane with constant height are available, this requires corresponding orientation solutions. All optical satellites are equipped with direct sensor orientation based on a positioning system, gyros and star sensors, so they can estimate the orientation parameters. For IKONOS, QuickBird and OrbView-3, this can be made without control points with a standard deviation of the ground coordinates in the range of 10 m and better. The orientation information is available as view direction from the scene centre or start of scene or as ephemeris and as rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs). This allows the determination of the scene orientation by geometric reconstruction or bias corrected RPCs using control points. In addition approximations like 3D-affine transformation, direct linear transformation and terrain related RPCs are in use. The accuracy of the methods is compared in relation to the number and distribution of the control points and the limitations of the approximations are investigated. The approximations of the orientations by 3D affine transformation and direct linear transformation can only handle images projected to a plane with constant height like IKONOS and QuickBird or Standard. For original images they are not leading to acceptable accuracy. In any case they require more and three-dimensional well distributed control points. [Termes IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with the problem of blind source separation of remote sensing data based on a Bayesian estimation framework. We consider the case of multispectral images in which we have observed images of the same zone through different spectral bands. The land cover types existing in the scanned zone constitute the sources to separate. Associating each source to a specific significant theme remains the real challenge in the source-separation method applied to satellite images. In fact, multispectral images consist of multiple channels, each channel containing data acquired from different bands within the frequency spectrum. Since most objects emit or reflect energy over a large spectral bandwidth, there usually exists a significant correlation between channels. This constitutes the first difficulty for sources identification. The second difficulty lies in the heterogeneity of most of the geological and vegetative ground surfaces. In this case, the geometrical projection of a single detector element at the Earth's surface, which is sometimes called the instantaneous field of view, is formed from a mixture of spectral signatures. In such circumstances, the needed information is either not available or not reliable. In this paper, the goal is to establish a new approach based on a two-level source separation (TLSS), which consists of a spectral separation along the different used bands and a spatial separation along neighboring pixels of each image band. The spectral separation has been used prior to the Bayesian approach, and it is based on a second-order statistics approach that exploits the correlation through different spectral bands of the multispectral sensor. The given images are represented according to independent axes that provide more effective representation of the information within the observation images. The spectral separation consists of identifying the sources without resorting to any a priori information, hence the term blind. The obtained source-separation represent the starting point for the Bayesian approach, which is known for its weakness in front of initial conditions. To identify a significant theme for each source, we have to spatially separate each image based on a Bayesian source-separation framework. The proposed approach has the added advantages of the blind source method as well as the Bayesian method. It should give segmented images related to each theme covering the scanned zone, which are the TLSS results of the observation images.
