[Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Auteur) This study evaluates six different approaches to classifying and mapping fire severity using multi-temporal Landsat Thematic Mapper data. The six approaches tested include: two based on temporal image differencing and ratioing between pre-fire and post-fire images, two based on principal component analysis of pre- and post-fire imagery, and two based on artificial neural networks, one using just post-fire imagery and the other both pre- and post-fire imagery. Our results demonstrated the potential value for any of these methods to provide quantitative fire severity maps, but one of the image differencing methods (ND4/7) provided a flexible, robust, and analytically simple approach that could be applied anywhere in the Continental U.S. Based on the results of this test, the ND4/7 was implemented operationally to classify and map fire severity over 1.2 million hectares burned in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Northern Great Plains during the 2000 fire season, as well as the 2001 fire season (Gmelin and Brewer, 2002). Approximately the same procedure was adopted in 2001 by the USDA Forest Service, Remote Sensing Applications Center to produce Burned Area Reflectance Classifications for national-level support of Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation activities (Orlemann, 2002). [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Les zones humides situées au coeur des marges semi-arides du domaine méditerranéen sont des milieux fragiles, sensibles aux variations introduites dans leurs bilans climatiques et/ou hydrologiques et particulièrement marquées par des pressions anthropiques accrues depuis les années 1960. En Anatolie centrale, la disparition rapide et récente des zones humides revêt de multiples facettes. L'objectif de cet article est de monter comment le traitement d'une série d'images satellitales multispectrales (LANDSAT TM et SPOT XS) permet de mettre en évidence d'une part, la vitesse des changements structurels au sein de la zone humide d'Akgol (i.e. contraction, fragmentation et mutations) à partir d'une analyse diachronique régressive (2000-1993-1987-1984) et, d'autre part, d'identifier la nature des transformations spatiales (i.e. ouverture de la roselière, progression de la steppe herbacée, etc.) à partir de classifications croisées. Ces résultats sont utiles à une meilleure compréhension de la sensibilité des marais aux dynamiques récentes des paysages centre-anatoliens. [Termes IGN] saisonRésumé : (Auteur) An efficient method is proposed for the analysis of atmospheric pressure effects on gravity variations. It processes gravity variations and pressure signals using an orthogonal filter bank derived from high-degree Daubechies wavelets. The method introduces the atmospheric pressure admittance, which is both time- and frequency-dependent, and thus provides more information about when and how the frequency components in the pressure signal influence gravity variations. We demonstrate the efficiency of the wavelet method by applying it to observations from the Wuhan (China) superconducting gravimeter station. The analysis of gravity and pressure signals in 14 sub-bands with different bandwidths covering a frequency range from 0.176 to 720cpd (cycles per day) reveals that local atmospheric pressure fluctuations start to induce obvious effects on gravity variations in the seismic band 0.52-1.04 mHz (periods 16 to 32 min) and highly cor-relate with gravity variation in the long-period seismic mode band 0.26-0.52 mHz (periods 32-64 min). The harmonics of solar heating-induced atmospheric tides play a leading role in interfering with the variation of gravity residuals in the frequency band 0.704-11.25 cpd (periods 128 min to 1.42 day). Local atmospheric pressure effects on gravity variation are very strong in the frequency band 0.176-0.704cpd (periods 1.42-5.69 day). Accurately filtering quarter-diurnal tides into a narrow band further demonstrates the efficiency of the wavelet method. After removing secular gravity changes and long-period atmospheric pressure variations, we show that there are obvious variations of local pressure admittance on time scales of hours to days. We also reveal seasonal variability of pressure admittances in the band 0. 176-0.352 cpd (periods 2.84-5.69 day) after removing the effects of solar heating atmospheric tides. [Termes IGN] méthode de Monte-CarloRésumé : (Auteur) The number of training samples per class (n) required for accurate Maximum Likelihood (ML) classification is known to be affected by the number of bands (p) in the input image. However, the general rule which defines that n should be 10p to 30p is often enforced universally in remote sensing without questioning its relevance to the complexity of the specific discrimination problem. Furthermore, identifying this many training samples is often problematic when many classes and/or many bands are used. It is important, then, to test how this generally accepted rule matches common remote sensing discrimination problems because it could be unnecessarily restrictive for many applications. This study was primarily conducted in order to test whether the general rule defining the relationship between n and p was well-suited for ML classification of a relatively simple remote sensing-based discrimination problem. To summarise the mean response of n-to-p for our study site, a Monte Carlo procedure was used to randomly stack various numbers of bands into thousands of separate image combinations that were then classified using an ML algorithm. The bands were randomly selected from a 119-band Enhanced Thematic Mapper-plus (ETM+) dataset comprised of 17 images acquired during the 2001-2002 southern hemisphere summer agricultural growing season over an irrigation area in south-eastern Australia. Results showed that the number of training samples needed for accurate ML classification was much lower than the current widely accepted rule. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Natural hazards like landslides, avalanches, floods and debris flows can result in enormous property damage and human casualties in mountainous regions. Switzerland has always been exposed to a wide variety of natural hazards mostly located in its alpine valleys. Recent natural disasters comprising avalanches, floods, debris flows and slope instabilities led to substantial loss of life and damage to property infrastructure, cultural heritage and environment. In order to offer a solid technical infrastructure, a new concept and expert-tool based on a integrated web-based database/GIS structure is being developed under HazNETH. Given the HazNETH database design contemplates the detection and mapping of diagnostic features from remote sensors (e.g., ground, air and space borne), this paper analyses the use of rernote sensing data in landslides studies during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, including a discussion of its potential and research challenges as result of new operational and forthcoming technologies such as the very high spatial resolution optical and infrared imagery of Ikonos, Quickbird IRS CartoSat-1, ALOS, the satellite based interferometric SAR (InSAR and DInSAR of Radarsat, ERS, Envisat, TerraSAR-X, Cosmo/SkyMed, ALOS), micro-satellites like the Pléiades, DMC, RapidEye, airborne LASER altimetry or ground-based differential interferometric SAR. The use of remote sensing data, whether air-, satellite- or ground-based varies according to three main stages of a landslide relate study, namely a) detection and identification; b) monitoring; c) spatial analysis and hazard prediction. Accordingly, this paper presents and discusses previous applications of remote sensing tools as related to these three main phases, proposing a conceptual framework for the contribution of remote sensing to the design of databases for natural hazards like debris flows, and identifying areas for further research.
