[Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Image registration is concerned with the problem of how to combine data and/or information from multiple sensors in order to achieve improved accuracies and better inference about the environment than could be attained through the use of a single sensor. Registration of imagery and information from multiple sources is essential for a variety of applications in remote sensing, medical diagnosis, computer vision, and pattern recognition. In general, an image registration methodology must deal with four issues. First, a decision has to be made regarding the choice of primitives for the registration procedure. The second issue is concerned with establishing the registration transformation function that mathematically relates geometric attributes of corresponding primitives. Then, a similarity measure should be devised to ensure the correspondence of conjugate primitives. Finally, a matching strategy has to be designed and implemented as a controlling framework that utilizes the primitives, the similarity measure, and the transformation function to solve the registration problem. This paper outlines a comprehensive investigation and implementation of the involved issues in a semi-automatic registration procedure capable of handling multi-source satellite imagery with varying geometric resolutions. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents detection of the collapsed buildings caused by earthquakes using digital elevation models (DEMs) created from pre- and post-earthquake stereo aerial photographs. It is based on the idea that changes in the heights of collapsed buildings can be detected. The study was conducted using aerial photographs taken before (1994) and after (1999) the Izmit earthquake in Turkey. DEMs were created automatically from both pre- and post-earthquake aerial photographs at 5m spatial resolution. The DEMs created from the two epochs were then differenced and the difference DEM obtained was analysed building by building to detect those buildings whose height difference between pre- and post-earthquake exceeded a specified threshold level. The producer's accuracy for detecting the collapsed buildings was found to be 84%. The results show that the difference DEM of the pre- and post-earthquake aerial images can reveal successfully the collapsed buildings caused by the earthquake. It was found that determining an optimum threshold level between change and no change pixels of the difference DEM is important. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, a set of multi-spectral images were used to locate and identify the irregular settlements zones in the Athens metropolitan area. To achieve this goal, indexes-Brightness Index and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index-and supervised classification are computed and applied to the images. In order to locate and identify these regions, common biophysical characteristics related to the urban and suburban landscape structures were identified. Five types of biophysical class were distinguished: (1) inner dense city with high buildings and absence of vegetation; (2) suburban areas with recent construction of buildings and absence of vegetation ; (3) green suburban areas; (4) high-density vegetation zones; and (5) recent forest fire regions. Some limitations are presented and discussed due to confusion of land-cover types between bare land and recent constructed areas, or between various types of vegetation and some urban green zones. Results are integrated within a Geographical Information System (GIS), allowing the user to check the legaI situation of the classified areas using the Urban Plan of Athens (1983-1995) documentation. This facilitates a proposal and representation of topology of irregular settlements. Such techniques might be very fruitful for developing countries or recently industrialized ones to identify speciflic irregular settlements.
