[Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) Geometric correction accuracy of IRS-1D panchromatic imagery was investigated using GPS- and 1:25000 scale topographic map-derived control points. The differentially corrected GPS-derived coordinates provided markedly more accurate results than did uncorrected handheld GPS and map-derived GCPs. The rms error value of differentially corrected GPS-derived control points based on second-degree polynomial was in the order of + 3 m. Geometric corrections made with second-degree polynomials, using both the map- and uncorrected handheld GPS-derived control points, yielded rms error values in the order of + 5 m. The results revealed that the uncorrected handheld GPS-derived control points can be a valuable alternative to planimetric control for geometric correction of IRS-1C/D panchromatic imagery with one-pixel size accuracy. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) The so-called hot spot is a fine directional signature of the surface reflectance observed for phase angles close to zero. In this paper, we analyze and discuss several such signatures acquired from the airborne POLDER and HyMap instruments during the DAISEX'99 campaign over agricultural crops. The observed signatures are very similar to those acquired from space at a resolution of several tens of kilometers [J. Geophys. Res. 107 (2002)], which provides further evidence that the hot spot is a scale-free feature. The hot spots can be fitted by a twoparameter function (amplitude and width) of the phase angle derived from canopy radiative transfer modeling. The model predicts that the amplitude is directly related to the leaf reflectance, while the width is a function of the canopy structure. The retrieved leaf reflectance values over a wide spectral range are in very good agreement with noncoincident laboratory measurement. The retrieved half widths are on the order of 1° with no significant variability between the analyzed targets. There is an apparent spectral variability in the half width, a feature in contradiction with the modeling, although the variations are not larger than the uncertainties. [Termes IGN] savaneRésumé : (Auteur) A new integrated approach, involving continuum-removed absorption features, the red edge position and neural networks, is developed and applied to map grass nitrogen concentration in an African savanna rangeland. Nitrogen, which largely determines the nutritional quality of grasslands, is commonly the most limiting nutrient for grazers. Therefore, the remote sensing of foliar nitrogen concentration in savanna rangelands is important for an improved understanding of the distribution and feeding patterns of wildlife. Continuum removal was applied on two absorption features located in the visible (R 550-757) and the SWIR (R 2015-2199) from an atmospherically corrected HYMAP MK1 image. A feature selection algorithm was used to select wavelength variables from the absorption features. Selected band depths from the absorption features as well as the red edge position (REP) were input into a backpropagation neural network. The best-trained neural network was used to map nitrogen concentration over the whole study area. Results indicate that the new integrated approach could explain 60% of the variation in savanna grass nitrogen concentration on an independent test data set, with a root mean square error (rmse) of 0. 13 (+ 8.3 0% of the mean observed nitrogen concentration). This result is better compared to the result obtained using multiple linear regression, which yielded an R of 38%, with a RMSE of 0.16 (+ 10.30% of the mean observed nitrogen concentration) on an independent test data set. The study demonstrates the potential of airborne hyperspectral data and neural networks to estimate and ultimately to map nitrogen concentration in the mixed species environments of Southern Africa. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Accuracy assessment for remote sensing classification is commonly based on using an error matrix, or confusion table, which needs reference, or 'ground truthing', data to support. When undertaking change detection using numerous multi-temporal images, it is often difficult to make the accuracy assessment by the 'traditional' method, which typically requires simultaneous collection of reference data. In this study, we propose a new approach by arguing change rationality with post-classification comparison. Multitemporal Landsat TM images were classified for land use in an urban fringe area of Beijing, China and the post-classification comparison of these classified images shows change trajectories through the time series. These change trajectories were then analysed by assessing their rationality against a set of logical rules to separate cases of 'real land use change' and possible classification errors. The analvsis results show that the overall accuracy for land use change in the urban fringe area was 86%, with a fuzziness of 7%. Although it is argued that the uncertainty, still exists on classification accuracy assessed by this method. It nevertheless provides an alternative approach for more reasonable assessment when ideal simultaneous 'ground truthing' is not available. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a comprehensive approach to effectively and accurately extract coastlines from satellite imagery. It consists of a sequence of image processing algorithms, in which the key component is image segmentation based on a locally adaptive thresholding technique. Several technical innovations have been made to improve the accuracy and efficiency for determining the land/ water boundaries. The use of the Levenberg-Marquardt method and the Canny edge detector speeds up the convergence of iterative Gaussian curve fitting process and improves the accuracy of the bimodal Gaussian parameters. The result is increased reliability of local thresholds for image segmentation. A series of further image processing steps are applied to the segmented images. Particularly, grouping and labelling contiguous image regions into individual image objects enables us to utilize heuristic human knowledge about the size and continuity of the land and ocean masses to discriminate the true coastline from other object boundaries. The final product of our processing chain is a vector-based line coverage of the coastline, which can be readily incorporated into a GIS database. Our method has been applied to both radar and optical satellite images, and the positional precision of the resulting coastline is measured at the pixel level.
