[Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Field studies among diverse biomes demonstrate that massbased nitrogen concentration at leaf and canopy scales is strongly related to carbon uptake and cycling. Combined field and airborne imaging spectrometry studies demonstrate the capacity for accurate empirical estimation of forest canopy N concentration and other biochemical constituents at scales from forest stands to small landscapes. In this paper, we report on the utility of the first spacebased imaging spectrometer, Hyperion, for estimation of temperate forest canopy N concentration as compared to that achieved with the airborne highaltitude imaging spectrometer, the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS). Overall accuracy of Hyperion estimates of forest canopy N concentration, as compared with field measurements, were within 0.25% dry mass, and AVIRISbased estimates were within 0.19% dry mass, each well within the accuracy required to distinguish among forested ecosystems in nitrogen status. [Termes IGN] spectrographeRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a CCD (charge coupled device) camerabased hyperspectral imaging system designed for both stationary and airborne remote sensing applications. The system consists of a high performance digital CCD camera, an imaging spectrograph, an optional focal plane scanner, and a PC computer equipped with a frame grabbing board and camera utility software. The CCD camera provides 1280(h) x 1024(v) pixel resolution and true 12bit dynamic range. The imaging spectrograph is attached to the camera via an adapter to disperse radiation into a range of spectral bands. The effective spectral range resulting from this integration is from 457.2 nm to 921.7 nm. The optional focal plane scanner can be attached to the front of the spectrograph via another adapter for stationary image acquisition. The camera and the frame grabbing board are connected via a double coaxial cable, and the utility software allows for complete camera control and image acquisition. The imaging system captures one line image for all the bands at a time and an aircraft or the focal plane scanner serves as a mobile platform to carrv out push broom scanning in the alongtrack direction. The horizontal and vertical binning capability of the camera makes it possible to obtain images with various spatial (160, 320, 640 and 1280 pixels in image width) and spectral (32, 64, 128, 256, 512 and 1024 bands) resolutions. Formulas are presented to show the relationships among binning factors, spatial resolutions, and flight height and speed. Images with all 24 possible combinations of binning factors were collected in a laboratory setting. Airborne images with 128 bands and a width of 640 pixels were also obtained from agricultural fields, rangelands and waterways. Procedures were developed to correct geometric distortions of the airborne hyperspectral imagery. Preliminary image acquisition testing trials indicate that this CCD camerabased hyperspectral imaging system has potential for agricultural and natural resources applications. Six ALI channels in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range (0.4-1.0 um) were useful discriminating between ferric-iron alteration minerals based on the spectral shapes of electronic absorption features seen in continuum-removed spectra. Six ASTER channels in the short wavelength infrared (1.0-2.5 um) enabled distinctions between clay and sulfate mineral types based on the positions of band related to Al-OH vibrational absorption features. Hypeimagery embedded in the broader image coverage of ALI and ASTER provided essential leverage for calibrating and improving the mapping accuracy of the multispectral data. This capability is especially valuable in remote areas of the earth where available geologic and other ground truth information is limited. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with the automatic extraction of building outlines using a pair of optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The aim is to define areas of interest for building height reconstruction in radargrammetric or interferometric applications. Since high resolution optical satellite images are now easily available, such methods merging SAR and optical information could be useful to improve 3D SAR reconstruction (the optical image giving only information on the scene organization). Both SAR and optical data bring complementary information about the building presence and shape. The proposed method is divided into two main steps : first, extraction of partial potential building footprints on the SAR image, and then shape detection on the optical one using the previously extracted primitives (lines). Two methods of shape detection have been developed, the simplest one finding the "best" rectangular shape and the second one searching for a more complicated shape in case of failure of the first one. Results for an industrial area acquired with two incidence angles for the SAR image are presented and analyzed. [Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) This research was designed to evaluate the operational utility of airborne video for classification accuracy assessment of satellite imagery. There are a number of logistical advantages in utilizing airborne video data particularly in remote or large catchment regions where ground accessibility can be prohibitively expensive. In a study of land cover characteristics in the Barossa Valley, South Australia comparisons of Landsat ETM+ classification accuracy assessments were derived from both airborne video and standard ground truthing point sampling techniques. The airborne video data was obtained by randomly frame grabbing 243 individual scenes along four predetermined flight lines and computing classification accuracies and error matrix statistics. These results were then compared with similar statistics derive ' dfirom 180 randomly chosen ground sampling sites. The costs involved in obtaining both sets of data per sampling point were also calculated. The results demonstrated that the airborne video data provided similar degrees of accuracy assessment at a cost of approximately one seventh that of the ground survey with the added advantages of increased data collection, overall improved site accessibility and the ability to continually store and review the data. The cost differentiation would become even more pronounced in more remote and inaccessible areas. In general the results of the unsupervised Landsat ETM+ classification were rather poor producing an overall general accuracy of 70% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.65, highlighting the classification difficulties encountered in using commercial satellite imagery for land cover assessments in an area with very heterogeneous fine grained land use patterns.
