[Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we describe the evaluation of a method for building detection by the Dempster–Shafer fusion of airborne laser scanner (ALS) data and multi-spectral images. For this purpose, ground truth was digitised for two test sites with quite different characteristics. Using these data sets, the heuristic models for the probability mass assignments are validated and improved, and rules for tuning the parameters are discussed. The sensitivity of the results to the most important control parameters of the method is assessed. Further we evaluate the contributions of the individual cues used in the classification process to determine the quality of the results. Applying our method with a standard set of parameters on two different ALS data sets with a spacing of about 1 point/m2, 95% of all buildings larger than 70 m2 could be detected and 95% of all detected buildings larger than 70 m2 were correct in both cases. Buildings smaller than 30 m2 could not be detected. The parameters used in the method have to be appropriately defined, but all except one (which must be determined in a training phase) can be determined from meaningful physical entities. Our research also shows that adding the multi-spectral images to the classification process improves the correctness of the results for small residential buildings by up to 20%. [Termes IGN] superposition de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Surface measurement of complex geometric objects by means of optical techniques, such as laser scanning or photogrammetry, requires multiple views from various stations. The data sets of the views, e.g. point clouds and photogrammetric images, are given in individual coordinate systems. For a complete representation of the objects, the views have to be transformed into one common coordinate system. This task is denoted as registration and involves an estimation of the transformation parameters between different coordinate systems. In this paper, a concept for a pairwise feature based registration of hybrid laser scanner data sets is proposed. The concept includes the feature extraction and description by simultaneous consideration of laser scanner data and photogrammetric images, as well as the recognition of consistent feature correspondences. The features are viewpoint invariant and are described with a rectified image patch on planar surface geometry in object space. Two different data sets are used to demonstrate that the proposed concept for feature extraction, feature description and correspondence search is successful to register hybrid laser scanner data sets with a high level of automation. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Since hyperspectral images contain rich and fine spectral information, an improvement of land use/cover classification accuracy is highly expected from the utilization of such images. However, the traditional statistics-based classification methods which have been successfully applied to multispectral data in the past are not as effective as to hyperspectral data. One major reason is that the number of spectral bands is too large relative to the number of training samples. This problem is caused by curse of dimensionality, which refers to the fact that the sample size required for training a specific classifier grows exponentially with the number of spectral bands. A simple but sometimes very effective way to overcome this problem is to reduce the dimensionality of hyperspectral images. This can be done by feature extraction that a small number of salient features are extracted from the hyperspectral data when confronted with a limited size of training samples. In this paper, a new feature extraction method based on the matching pursuit (MP) is proposed to extract useful features for the classification of hyperspectral images. The matching pursuit algorithm uses a greedy strategy to find an adaptive and optimal representation of the hyperspectral data iteratively from a highly redundant wavelet packets dictionary. An AVIRIS data set was tested to illustrate the classification performance after matching pursuit method was applied. In addition, some existing feature extraction methods based on the wavelet transform are also compared with the matching pursuit method in terms of the classification accuracies. The experiment results showed that the wavelet and matching pursuit method exactly provide an effective tool for feature extraction. The classification problem caused by curse of dimensionality can be avoided by matching pursuit and wavelet-based dimensionality reduction. [Termes IGN] sentierRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this study was to evaluate image-based procedures for monitoring cross-border foot trails in the US - Mexico border zone in eastern San Diego County using airborne remote sensing techniques. Specifically, digital multi-spectral and multi-temporal imagery from an airborne digital multi-spectral imaging system, digital image processing, and visual image analysis techniques were explored in the context of detecting and delineating new trail features and updating trail GIS layers. Three trail updating approaches: map-to-image (M-I) overlay, map and image-to-image (M/I-I) differencing, map and image-to-image (M/I-I) swiping and two types of spectral transform, PCA and NDVI, were tested and compared. The M-I overlay was found to be the most reliable trail updating approach. The optimal image enhancement method for the M-I overlay approach varied with vegetation structure. PCA imagery yielded better results than NDVI imagery in a highly disturbed area and NDVI imagery performed better in a densely vegetated area. The M/I-I swiping approach was useful for distinguishing misregistered extant trails from new trail features. [Termes IGN] surveillance hydrologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a complete framework to support the monitoring of natural and man-made disasters by means of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The fractal geometry is the most appropriate mathematical instrument in describing the irregularity of a natural observed scene, by means of few effective and reliable parameters. Therefore, fractal concepts can be used to model and identify geometrical changes that occurred in areas hit by disasters. We present an overall framework employing fractal-based models, algorithms, and tools to support the identification of natural area changes due to natural or man-made disasters. Such a framework includes an algorithm used to extract fractal parameters from a 2-D signal, a fractal interpolation tool, and a SAR raw-signal simulator. The combined use of these tools provides an innovative instrument for disaster monitoring applications. In this paper, we implement the fractal framework to obtain a relation between the fractal parameters of a SAR image and those of the relative imaged area. In addition, a case study is discussed, showing the potentiality of our framework for flooding detection.
