[Termes IGN] orientation interneRésumé : (Auteur) The linear push-broom camera is one of the most important imaging systems in modern photogrammetry and remote sensing to collect high-resolution digital panchromatic and multispectral images for comprehensive evaluation of natural resources and environmental conditions. Most commercial high-resolution satellites such as SPOT-5, Ikonos-2, and QuickBird use similar sensors. Airborne sensors such as the ADS40 and STARIMAGER® also use the push-broom approach to collect multi-channel, seamless image strips for linear objects such as roads, railways, rivers, seashores, electric power lines, pipe lines, and high-rise building areas. Other commercial hyperspectral sensors also use the push-broom approach to collect digital images for remote sensing applications.
High performance linear cameras require high resolution geometric, spectral, and radiometric calibration. This topic has not been covered in the scientific literature. Although the self-calibration is successful to compute the calibration parameters of frame camera, it is denied in our tests since the linear camera’s calibrated parameters are dependent on the accuracy of on-board GPS/IMU position and attitude data. In this paper, a rigorous calibration method is presented. This approach has been successfully used in our developed airborne three-line scanner (TLS) imaging system STARIMAGER® in the last five years. The method can accurately compute TLS’s focal length, principle point location, lens distortion, CCD pixel size, CCD curve deformation, and convergence angles between each CCD line sensor on the focal plane. Without any modification, it can be directly applied to single linear sensors and multi-linear sensors. Our target area is the Salar de Uyuni, in Bolivia. It is a large, active salt flat or playa, which is maintained as an almost perfectly level and highly reflective surface by annual flooding, to a mean depth of 30–50 cm. We use MISR data to estimate spatial and temporal variations in water depth during the waning portion of the 2001 flooding cycle. We use a single ICESat laser altimetry profile to calibrate our water depth model. Though the salt surface is probably the smoothest surface of its size on Earth, with less that 30 cm RMS height variations over an area of nearly 104 km2, it is not completely featureless. Topography there includes a peripheral depression, or moat, around the edge of the salt, and several sets of prominent parallel ridges, with 5 km wavelength and 30 cm amplitude. The process by which these features form is still not well characterized. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne hyperspectral remote sensing was applied to agricultural land in the Miura Peninsula, near the metropolis of Tokyo in Japan. The study area is characterized by complicated land use patches, which is the general characteristic of most agricultural lands in Japan. Several feature extraction/classification methods were examined in classifying the land use and plant species. The results showed that decision boundary feature extraction (DBFE) was better than principal component analysis (PCA) as the feature extraction method. Moreover, the pre-classification process using NDVI that separates the whole study area into vegetated area and non-vegetated areas also improved the classification accuracy. After the pre-procedures, the land use and plant species were finally mapped by maximum likelihood classification (MLC) or extraction and classification of homogeneous objects (ECHO). The best kappa (overall accuracy) of classification was 0.914 (92.4%) and 0.924 (93.3%) for MLC and ECHO, respectively. The best accuracies of each category for the image were 79.5% to 100% for plant species (watermelon, pumpkin, marigold, grass and tree), 88.7% to 100% for soil types, 97.8% for concrete, and 99.4% for vinyl-mulches. Although, built-up area has low estimation accuracy, this did not affect the overall classification accuracy because it covers only a very small area. [Termes IGN] Victoria (Australie)Résumé : (Auteur) Orthophotos (or orthoimages if in digital form) have long been recognised as a supplement or alternative to standard maps. The increasing applications of orthoimages require efforts to ensure the accuracy of produced orthoimages. As digital photogrammetry technology has reached a stage of relative maturity and stability, the availability of high quality ground control points (GCPs) and digital elevation models (DEMs) becomes the central issue for successfully implementing an image orthorectification project. Concerns with the impacts of the quality of GCPs and DEMs on the quality of orthoimages inspire researchers to look for more reliable approaches to acquire high quality GCPs and DEMs for orthorectification. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), an emerging technology, offers capability of capturing high density three dimensional points and generating high accuracy DEMs in a fast and cost-effective way. Nowadays, highly developed computer technologies enable rapid processing of huge volumes of LiDAR data. This leads to a great potential to use LiDAR data to get high quality GCPs and DEMs to improve the accuracy of orthoimages. This paper presents methods for utilizing LiDAR intensity images to collect high accuracy ground coordinates of GCPs and for utilizing LiDAR data to generate a high quality DEM for digital photogrammetry and orthorectification processes. A comparative analysis is also presented to assess the performance of proposed methods. The results demonstrated the feasibility of using LiDAR intensity image-based GCPs and the LiDAR-derived DEM to produce high quality orthoimages. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate time registration, georeferencing, and instantaneous feature extraction are important challenges for real-time mapping systems. The Geodetic Engineering Laboratory (TOPO) at the EPFL has designed a mobile platform to automatically determine the geometry of the road centerline: the Photobus. Our system fully exploits the concept of direct georeferencing by combining navigation data with video sequences grabbed by a downward-pointing camera. This paper presents the realization of the authors' vision of real-time mapping that encompasses a mobile acquisition platform dedicated for a well-defined task. To sustain the high performance requirements of such a data-critical application, the use of custom-made software based on open-source libraries is a preferred approach of implementation. In this context, we investigate the suitability of using a close-to-nadiral CMOS camera to extract the road geometry with a reliable and almost latency-free methodology. We will first focus on the frame-grabbing process for which an open-source approach guarantees the versatile integration of the camera into the mapping platform. The second part of the paper discusses the process of extracting and georeferencing features of interest in an automatic manner. To open perspectives, we will investigate an extension of the surveying capabilities of the Photobus with stereovision.
