[Termes IGN] image multibandeRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a nonlinear subband decomposition scheme with perfect reconstruction is proposed for lossless and progressive coding of multispectral images. The merit of this new scheme is to exploit efficiently the spatial and the spectral redundancies contained in the multispectral images related to a scene of interest. Besides, the proposed method is suitable for telebrowsing applications. Experiments carried out on real scenes allow to assess its performances. The simulation results demonstrate that our approach leads to improved compression performances compared with currently used lossless coders. [Termes IGN] précision de localisationRésumé : (Auteur) An empirical investigation into the effects of JPEG compression on the accuracy of photogrammetric point determination (PPD) is described. A pair of black-and-white aerial photographs of a city, taken at a scale of 1:8000, was selected and scanned at a resolution of 25 m. Eighteen image points were measured with the ISDM module of an Intergraph digital photogrammetric workstation (DPW), and the bundle adjustment of a single model was performed using WuGAPSsGps (Wuhan GPSsupported bundle block adjustment software). In processing various JPEG compressed images with Q-factors from I to 100, the accuracy of the 3D coordinates of the pass points was assessed and compared with that obtained from the original images (i.e., without compression). The empirical results show that, when the compression ratios are under 10, the compressed image is near-lossless. In other words, the visual quality of JPEG compressed images is still excellent and the accuracy of manual image mensuration is essentially not influenced. However, no indication can be found from the results that a compression of 10 is the critical value or the optimum compression level for PPD. Indeed, it is clear that the degradation of accuracy in PPD is almost linear. [Termes IGN] Thematic MapperRésumé : (Auteur) Coastal areas comprise some of the world's most important and sensitive ecosystems. Although optical remote sensing systems have demonstrated an ability to map land cover in many coastal environments, spectral confusion has also been reported. The parameters of SAR imagery suggest that combinations of SAR and optical data may improve land-cover classification accuracy. Seven satellite SAR data sets were merged with TM data using four techniques. These were tested by classifying 11 upland and wetland land covers in a rapidly urbanizing coastal area of the northeast United States. Not all SABITM combinations bettered the accuracy obtained using TM data alone. In general, simple techniques improved accuracy more than did complex image merge methods. Although one SAR image proved superior overall, improvement in detection accuracy varied among individual land-cover categories and SAR data. The results point to the possible benefits of hierarchical-layered classifications. [Termes IGN] maraisRésumé : (Auteur) Edge operators are widely used on grey-level images as a first step in image segmentation or image interpretation. Methods that are currently used for edge filtering are complex and only valid under certain conditions, or useful for threeband colour images only. The problem remains on how to apply edge filtering on multispectral or even hyperspectral images. This paper presents a method that can be used for multispectral and hyperspectral edge filtering. The method uses filtering techniques in combination with three distance measures, namely the Euclidean distance, the spectrum intensity difference, or the spectral angle. The same hyperspectral edge filters serve as homogeneity measures. By simply 'plugging in' another distance measure in the same filter, a separation between intensity and spectral content is achieved, which makes the hyperspectral edge filters the natural extension of colour edge filters. The hyperspectral edge filters use information from all spectral bands to arrive at a (dis)similarity map in one step. The edge filters were tested on HyMap hyperspectral imagery of the island of Schiermormikoog. The test area includes agriculture and a saltmarsh. Experimental results are presented. The spectral angle (dis)similarity of neighbouring pixels can be directly compared with spectral angles already obtained by using the Spectral Angle Mapper for classification. We show that these hyperspectral edge filters assist image interpretation, even in heterogeneous ecosystems such as saltmarshes. [Termes IGN] matrice de covarianceRésumé : (Auteur) Anomaly detection becomes increasingly important in hyperspectral image analysis, since hyperspectral imagers can now uncover many material substances which were previously unresolved by multispectral sensors. Two types of anomaly detection are of interest and considered in this paper. One was previously developed by Reed and Yu to detect targets whose signatures are distinct from their surroundings. Another was designed to detect targets with low probabilities in an unknown image scene. Interestingly, they both operate the same form as does a matched filter. Moreover, they can be implemented in realtime processing, provided that the sample covariance matrix is replaced by the sample correlation matrix. One disadvantage of an anomaly detector is the lack of ability to discriminate the detected targets from another. In order to resolve this problem, the concept of target discrimination measures is introduced to cluster different types of anomalies into separate target classes. By using these class means as target information, the detected anomalies can be further classified. With inclusion of target discrimination in anomaly detection, anomaly classification can be implemented in a threestage process, first by anomaly detection to find potential targets, followed by target discrimination to cluster the detected anomalies into separate target classes, and concluded by a classifier to achieve target classification. Experiments show that anomaly classification performs very differently from anomaly detection.
