[Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (Auteur) First order spirit levelling and high precision GPS measurements have been used to quantify local deformations caused mainly by postglacial rebound in the Charlevoix seismic zone, the region with the high-est concentrated seismic activity in eastern Canada. In this paper, part of the Canadian first order vertical network, measured from 1909 to 1991, is analyzed for repeating levelling lines. In addition, a part of a first order geodetic network along the Saint Lawrence River surveyed by GPS in 1991 and 2005, is processed. The coordinate changes of these geodetic points allows for the determination of horizontal and vertical velocities leading to information about the crustal deformation of this region. The results show a southeast drift trend in the horizontal, and general uplift trend in the vertical. These agree well with previous GPS surveys conducted on Canadian Base Network (CBN) pillars in eastern Canada and with geophysical postglacial rebound (PGR) models. [Termes IGN] rebond post-glaciaireRésumé : (auteur) The provision of accurate models of Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) is presently a priority need in climate studies, largely due to the potential of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data to be used to determine accurate and continent-wide assessments of ice mass change and hydrology. However, modelled GIA is uncertain due to insufficient constraints on our knowledge of past glacial changes and to large simplifications in the underlying Earth models. Consequently, we show differences between models that exceed several mm/year in terms of surface displacement for the two major ice sheets: Greenland and Antarctica. Geodetic measurements of surface displacement offer the potential for new constraints to be made on GIA models, especially when they are used to improve structural features of the Earth’s interior as to allow for a more realistic reconstruction of the glaciation history. We present the distribution of presently available campaign and continuous geodetic measurements in Greenland and Antarctica and summarise surface velocities published to date, showing substantial disagreement between techniques and GIA models alike. We review the current state-of-the-art in ground-based geodesy (GPS, VLBI, DORIS, SLR) in determining accurate and precise surface velocities. In particular, we focus on known areas of need in GPS observation level models and the terrestrial reference frame in order to advance geodetic observation precision/accuracy toward 0.1 mm/year and therefore further constrain models of GIA and subsequent present-day ice mass change estimates. The two realizations of the International Terrestrial Reference System (ITRS), entitled ITRF2000 and ITRF2005, present a difference of 1.8 mm/yr between the velocities of their respective frame origins, suggesting an acceleration of the geocenter towards the North Pole. We investigate if such a displacement could be explained by geophysical phenomena, such as the present ice melting and the sea level rise. Using published observations on ice caps and glaciers, we calculated the range of geocenter motion that may occur today. We found that the global ice melting induces long-term displacements of the geocenter mainly along the Z-axis, toward the North Pole. The geocenter velocity is today between 0.3 and 0.7–0.8 mm/yr and has doubled during last decade with the recent acceleration of ice melting. Combining with Greff-Lefftz (2000) results on post-glacial rebound, we conclude that a present secular geocenter velocity of 1 mm/yr is possible. However, the recent increase of the geocenter velocity cannot explain the difference observed between the two last realizations of the ITRS. Our results comfort the previous conclusions about ITRF2000 and ITRF2005 and the pre-analysis of ITRF2008 data, suggesting that the large Z-translation rate between the ITRS realizations is probably due to an imprecise ITRF2000 origin. Finally, we show that determining precisely the geocenter velocity would give a new type of information that may be useful to more precisely constrain mass exchanges associated with climate changes. [Termes IGN] système de référence altimétriqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper investigates the normal-orthometric correction used in the definition of the Australian Height Datum, and also computes and evaluates normal and Helmert orthometric corrections for the Australian National Levelling Network (ANLN). Testing these corrections in Australia is important to establish which height system is most appropriate for any new Australian vertical datum. An approximate approach to assigning gravity values to ANLN benchmarks (BMs) is used, where the EGM2008-modelled gravity field is used to ‘re-construct’ observed gravity at the BMs. Network loop closures (for first- and second-order levelling) indicate reduced misclosures for all height corrections considered, particularly in the mountainous regions of south eastern Australia. Differences between Helmert orthometric and normal-orthometric heights reach 44 cm in the Australian Alps, and differences between Helmert orthometric and normal heights are about 26 cm in the same region. Normal-orthometric heights differ from normal heights by up to 18 cm in mountainous regions >2,000 m. This indicates that the quasigeoid is not compatible with normal-orthometric heights in Australia.
