[Termes IGN] SahelRésumé : (auteur) This paper is the first presentation of a project called GHYRAF (Gravity and Hydrology in Africa) devoted to the detailed comparison between models and multidisciplinary observations (ground and satellite gravity, geodesy, hydrology, meteorology) of the variations of water storage in Africa from the Sahara arid part to the monsoon equatorial part. We describe the various actions planned in this project. We first detail the actions planned in gravimetry which consist in two main surface gravity experiments: on the one hand the periodic repetition of absolute gravity measurements along a north–south monsoonal gradient of rainfall in West Africa, going from Tamanrasset (20 mm/year) in southern Algeria to Djougou (1200 mm/year) in central Benin; on the other hand the continuous measurements at Djougou (Benin) with a superconducting gravimeter to monitor with a higher sampling rate the gravity changes related to an extreme hydrological cycle. Another section describes the actions planned in GPS which will maintain and develop the present-day existing network in West Africa. The third type of actions deals with hydrology and we review the three sites that will be investigated in this joint hydrogeophysics project namely Wankama (near Niamey) and Bagara (near Diffa) in the Niger Sahelian zone and Nalohou (near Djougou) in the Benin monsoon zone. We also address the question of the ground truth of satellite-derived missions; in this context the GHYRAF project will lead to test the hydrology models by comparison both with in situ and satellite data such as GRACE, as well as to an important increase of our knowledge of the seasonal water cycle in Africa. We finally present preliminary results in GPS based on the analysis of the vertical motion of the Djougou site. The resulting absolute gravity changes related to the 2008 monsoon are finally given. [Termes IGN] topographie localeRésumé : (Auteur) Many regions around the world require improved gravimetric data bases to support very accurate geoid modeling for the modernization of height systems using GPS. We present a simple yet effective method to assess gravity data requirements, particularly the necessary resolution, for a desired precision in geoid computation. The approach is based on simulating high-resolution gravimetry using a topography-correlated model that is adjusted to be consistent with an existing network of gravity data. Analysis of these adjusted, simulated data through Stokes’s integral indicates where existing gravity data must be supplemented by new surveys in order to achieve an acceptable level of omission error in the geoid undulation. The simulated model can equally be used to analyze commission error, as well as model error and data inconsistencies to a limited extent. The proposed method is applied to South Korea and shows clearly where existing gravity data are too scarce for precise geoid computation. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Knowing the geoïd over Japan is essential for many geodetical and geophysical applications. Because of the tectonic settings of the area, significant geoid undulations occur in a wide range of spatial scales and make the determination of the geoïd a complex task. In some applications, high absolute accuracy at long and medium wavelengths is required for geoïd models with high resolution, which can be achieved by a proper combination of satellite gravity information with densely-distributed surface gravity data after careful consideration of their respective error characteristics. Here we show how to realize such a combination in a flexible way using spherical wavelets. The gravity potential is expressed as a linear combination of wavelets, whose coefficients are obtained by a least squares adjustment of the datasets. The combination needs to handle a large system of equations and we apply a domain decomposition method. First, we define sub-domains as subsets of wavelets. Based on the localization properties of the wavelets in space and frequency, we define hierarchical sub-domains of wavelets at different scales. On each scale, blocks of sub-domains are defined by using a tailored spatial splitting of the area. Second, we approximate the normal matrix for each block by introducing local approximation of the wavelets depending on the scale, in which local averages of the data are actually used for computation. Finally, we solve the system iteratively. In the beginning we validate the method with synthetic data, considering two kinds of noise: white noise and colored noise. We then apply the method to data over Japan: a satellite-based geopotential model, EIGEN-GL04S, and a local gravity model from a combination of land and marine gravity data and an altimetry-derived marine gravity model. A hybrid spherical harmonics/wavelet model of the geoïd is obtained at about 15 km resolution and the residuals indicate the existence of possible biases in the surface model. This information is used to correct the local model and the method is repeated with the corrected data, resulting in an improved hybrid model of the gravity field over Japan. [Termes IGN] VanuatuRésumé : (auteur) Satellite altimetry provides an ocean mean sea surface (MSS) map with global coverage and overall excellent precision. However, in some areas, like the Vanuatu archipelago, the coverage and resolution of this tool are not sufficient to correctly map the short scale undulations of the sea surface, due to numerous islands and to strong lithospheric and mantle heterogeneities. New applications such as seafloor geodesy may require local mean surface representation with improved resolution in specific areas. We used sea surface height collected with kinematic GPS during three different cruises in 2004, 2006 and 2007 to reconstruct a homogeneous sea surface map around Santo Island, Vanuatu. We assess the accuracy of this GPS-derived local sea surface to 6–19 cm and evaluate the quality of existing altimetry and gravity-derived MSSs on the Vanuatu archipelago. Observed short scale undulations are interpreted as due to local geodynamics.
