The changes of JERS1 backscatter and ERS1/2 tandem coherence between images are consistent over the area studied, in contrast to ERS1/2 backscatter. A modelbased regression analysis has been performed, and the use of the model for inversion is discussed and compared with other approaches found in the literature. The model parameters are discussed in terms of their relation to wind speed and temperature. Results from the different acquisitions are combined to improve the stem volume estimation. The accuracy in terms of rms error (RMSE) for standwise estimated stem volume is 310 m/ha using ERS1/2 coherence. Using backscatter and coherence from JERS1 we obtain an RMSE of 33035 m/ha. Finally, conditions for accurate retrieval of stem volume using multitemporal InSAR observations are discussed. We conclude that G and Lband repeatpass InSAR can provide stem volume estimates in boreal forests with accuracies similar to those of standard in situ measurements. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Spaceborne differential radar interferometry has proven a remarkable potential for mapping ground deformation phenomena (e.g., urban subsidence, volcano dynamics, coseismic and postseismic displacements along faults, as well as slope instability). However, a full operational capability has not been achieved yet due to atmospheric disturbances and phase decorrelation phenomena. These drawbacks can often beat least partially- overcome by carrying out measurements on a subset of image pixels corresponding to natural or artificial stable reflectors [permanent scatterers (PS)] and exploiting long temporal series of interferometric data. This approach allows one to push the measurement precision very close to its theoretical limit (in the order of ~1 mm for Cband European Remote Sensing (ERS)like sensors). In this paper, the detection of both timeuniform and seasonal deformation phenomena is addressed, and a first assessment of the precision achievable by means of the PS Technique is discussed. Results highlighting deformation phenomena occurring in two test sites in California are reported (Fremont in the Southern Bay Area and San Jose in the Santa Clara Valley). [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The differential interferometric SAR (DInSAR) technique has proved its capability to detect small surface deformations in several types of applications. In this paper, its use as a quantitative subsidence monitoring tool is addressed to. A complete procedure is described, giving emphasis to the algorithms that have a major impact on the quality of the DInSAR results : the calibration of the InSAR geometry based on ground control points, which guarantees a high accuracy of the InSAR geometric model ; a filtering procedure suitable to reduce the atmospheric effects in small-scale subsidences; and a data fusion procedure for multiple observations, which represents a key step to improve the quality of the DInSAR products. The procedure was used in the analysis of a small-scale urban subsidence located in Catalonia, northeastern Spain. The validation of the results, which was based on the comparison with precise and independent reference data, is discussed in detail. [Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with the automatic extraction of building outlines using a pair of optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The aim is to define areas of interest for building height reconstruction in radargrammetric or interferometric applications. Since high resolution optical satellite images are now easily available, such methods merging SAR and optical information could be useful to improve 3D SAR reconstruction (the optical image giving only information on the scene organization). Both SAR and optical data bring complementary information about the building presence and shape. The proposed method is divided into two main steps : first, extraction of partial potential building footprints on the SAR image, and then shape detection on the optical one using the previously extracted primitives (lines). Two methods of shape detection have been developed, the simplest one finding the "best" rectangular shape and the second one searching for a more complicated shape in case of failure of the first one. Results for an industrial area acquired with two incidence angles for the SAR image are presented and analyzed.
