Although the original formulation of the SVM method does not incorporate contextual information, there are different proposals to incorporate this type of information into it. Usually, these proposals modify the SVM training phase or make an integration of SVM classifications using stochastic models. This study presents a new perspective on the development of contextual SVMs. The main concept of this proposed method is to use the contextual information to displace the separation hyperplane, initially defined by the traditional SVM. This displaced hyperplane could cause a change of the class initially assigned to the pixel. To evaluate the classification effectiveness of the proposed method a case study is presented comparing the results with the standard SVM and the SVM post-processed by the mode (majority) filter. An ALOS/PALSAR image, PLR mode, acquired over an Amazon area was used in the experiment. Considering the inner area of test sites, the accuracy results obtained by the proposed method is better than SVM and similar to SVM post-processed by the mode filter. The proposed method, however, produces better results than mode post-processed SVM when considering the classification near the edges between regions. One drawback of the method is the computational cost of the proposed method is significantly greater than the compared methods. [Termes IGN] polarimétrie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Fully polarimetric L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter was collected using NASA's Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) SAR and regressed with in situ measure-ments of basal area (BA) and above ground biomass (AGB) of mature Loblolly pine stands in North Carolina. Results found HH polarization consistently displayed the lowest correlations where HV andVV exhibited the highest correlations in all groups for both BA and AGB. When plantation stands were analyzed separately (plantation versus natural), correlation improved significantly for both BA (R2 = 0.65, hv) and AGB (R2 = 0.66, vv). Similarly, results improved when natural stands were analyzed separately resulting in the highest correlation for AGB (R2 = 0.63, HV and VV). Data decomposition using the Freeman 3-component model indicated that the relative low correlations were due to the saturation of the L-band backscatter across the majority of the study area. [Termes IGN] tempsRésumé : (Auteur) Full-wave modeling of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data using Green's functions for wave propagation in planar layered media and antenna characteristic global reflection and transmission functions for describing far-field antenna effects, including antenna-medium interactions, has shown a great potential for nondestructive characterization of soils and materials. The accuracy of the retrieved parameters in the GPR data inversion depends on the accuracy of the GPR external calibration. In this research, we studied the stability and the repeatability of two different GPR systems, namely, frequency- and time-domain systems. A combination of a vector network analyzer and 800-5200 MHz horn antenna was used as a frequency-domain GPR (FD-GPR) whereas a GSSI GPR system using a 900 MHz bowtie antenna was used as a time-domain GPR (TD-GPR). Both GPR systems including their antennas were calibrated several times using measurements with the antennas at different heights over a perfect electric conductor (PEC) in the laboratory as well as over a water layer. In addition, measurements were performed over a thin water layer and a relatively thick sandy soil layer as validating medium. The results showed that the FD-GPR is relatively stable while the TD-GPR presents a significant drift which can be accounted for using corrections based on the air direct-coupling waves (free-space measurements). Water- and PEC-based calibrations provided very similar results for the GPR calibration functions. Inversions for the water layer and the sandy soil layer provided reliable results and showed a high degree of the repeatability for both radar systems. The error on the calibration based on inaccurate antenna heights over PEC showed the significant errors on the inversion results for the directive antenna (horn antenna) but less error for the bowtie antenna. This analysis demonstrated the general validity of the proposed far-field radar modeling approach, not only with respect to frequency and time domain radars but as well with respect to the calibrating medium. [Termes IGN] reconstruction 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The reconstruction of digital surface models (DSMs) of urban areas from interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is a challenging task. In particular the SAR inherent layover and shadowing effects need to be coped with by sophisticated processing strategies. In this paper, a maximum-likelihood estimation procedure for the reconstruction of DSMs from multi-aspect multi-baseline InSAR imagery is proposed. In this framework, redundant as well as contradicting observations are exploited in a statistically optimal way. The presented method, which is especially suited for single-pass SAR interferometers, is examined using test data consisting of experimental airborne millimeterwave SAR imagery. The achievable accuracy is evaluated by comparison to LiDAR-derived reference data. It is shown that the proposed estimation procedure performs better than a comparable non-statistical reconstruction method.
