[Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) This study examined the complementarity of spaceborne radar and optical data for surface feature identification. RADARSAT data sets were assessed independently and in combination with Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) multispectral data. The primary methodology was spectral signature extraction and the application of a statistical decision rule to classify the surface features for a site near Kericho, Kenya. Relative accuracy of the resultant classifications was established by digital integration and comparison to reference information derived from field visitation. Speckle filtering was a great improvement over the poor results achieved with the unfiltered, original radar data but still not adequate for accurate land cover classification. The extraction and use of Variance texture measures was found to be very advantageous. The overall results were not significant improvements over speckle removal (6 % increase) but several individual classes, forest and urban, had excellent results with texture. Combinations of radar with Landsat TM greatly improved results, achieving near perfect classification of all individual classes. The highest overall accuracy was achieved with a merger that included the best individual texture image and six reflectance bands of the TM data. The systematic strategy of this study, determination of the best individual method before introducing the next procedure, was effective in managing a very complex, almost infinite set of analysis possibilities. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Digital elevation models (DEM) from satellite data are generated mainly from two types of datasets using completely different methods: photogrammetry for optical stereo images (e.g. SPOT5, IKONOS) and interferometry for Synthetic Aperture Radar data (InSAR, e.g. ERS-Tandem, SRTM). Both generation methods show advantages and disadvantages but have similar accuracy values in comparison to a reference DEM. The paper aims at showing the potential for combined usage of several DSM (derived with different sensors and methods) to improve the overall accuracy. Some results are given for DEM fusion utilizing height error maps for each DSM and for DEM integration, where single point information from another DSM is inserted during the triangulation process. The quality of the DSM derived from one source and of the combined DSM depends on the steepness of the terrain and on the land cover type. For flat terrain or moderate hilly landscapes, a height accuracy in the order of 5 meters or better can be achieved for the mentioned sensors. Two test areas are chosen, where many different data sets are available and much knowledge exists from previous studies. The first test area is a region in the south-eastern part of Bavaria comprising a mostly hilly, post-glacial landscape including lakes and also mountains of the German Alps. The second test area is located in Catalonia, Spain, and includes the city of Barcelona as well as a mostly hilly terrain with some steep slopes and additionally the Mediterranean coast. The received DSM are compared qualitatively and quantitatively to the reference DEM with superior quality by looking at profiles and sub-area statistics. The results show that an improvement of the fused DSM and the integrated DSM can be quantitatively measured. Although the overall statistics for a larger region does show only a slight improvement, local errors can be reduced significantly so that the overall accuracy of the combined DSM is higher. [Termes IGN] trafic routierRésumé : (Auteur) For analyzing dynamic scenarios with many ground moving vehicles, airborne Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) radar is well-suited due to its wide-area, all-weather, day/night, and real time capabilities. The generation of GMTI tracks from these data is the backbone for ground surveillance and traffic flow analysis. In case of dense target situations, missing detections and false alarms, Multi-Hypotheses Tracking (MHT) is the method at choice to solve the inherent ambiguities in the data-targets assignment problem. The resulting MHT-tracks are suited to extract road map information which is highly up-to-date and fairly precise. Moreover, their accuracy is quantitatively described. The precision of the extracted road segments can be improved significantly using smoothed or retrodicted tracks. In turn, the extracted road information is exploited for the precise tracking of succeeding road targets. The proposed, fully Bayesian approach is illustrated by a simulated example including Doppler and terrain obscuration, providing hints to the achievable road map accuracies. [Termes IGN] photographie numériqueRésumé : (Auteur) An assessment of Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) sea ice concentrations under winter conditions using ice concentrations derived from Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) imagery obtained during the March 2003 Arctic sea ice validation field campaign is presented. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Environmental Technology Laboratory's Airborne Polarimetric Scanning Radiometer Measurements, which were made from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration P 3B aircraft during the campaign, were used primarily as a diagnostic tool to understand the comparative results and to suggest improvements to the AMSR-E ice concentration algorithm. Based on the AMSR-E/ETM+ comparisons, a good overall agreement with little bias ($sim$1%) for areas of first year and young sea ice was found. Areas of new ice production result in a negative bias of about 5% in the AMSR-E ice concentration retrievals, with a root mean square error of 8%. Some areas of deep snow also resulted in an underestimate of the ice concentration ($sim$10%). For all ice types combined and for the full range of ice concentrations, the bias ranged from 0% to 3%, and the rms errors ranged from 1% to 7%, depending on the region. The new-ice and deep-snow biases are expected to be reduced through an adjustment of the new-ice and ice-type C algorithm tie points.
