[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) are often limited in spatial coverage; they also may possess systematic artifacts when compared to comprehensive low-resolution maps. Here we correct artifacts and interpolate regions of missing data in airborne Topographic Synthetic Aperture Radar (TOPSAR) DEMs using a low-resolution Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) DEM. We use a prediction error (PE) filter to interpolate and fill missing data so that the interpolated regions have the same spectral content as the valid regions of the TOPSAR DEM. The SRTM DEM is used as an additional constraint in the interpolation. We use cross-validation methods to obtain the optimal weighting for the PE filter and SRTM DEM constraints. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Combining data from different sensors for visual or classification analysis is a common task in remote sensing. The first step is normally to register the images which may be considered geometric integration; the accuracy of this step is important to create a valuable final hybrid image. This paper addresses geometric integration and introduces a new method for automatically registering two dissimilar images, such as, a radar image and an optical image with high accuracy. Pre-registration of the two images to within a specified tolerance is required. In our examples, this tolerance is up to 17 pixels (at the scale of the higher resolution image) and may be achieved by, for example, visually located control points. The described approach then uses large-scale edge gradient contours in a process that automatically locates candidate control points on the contours. The points are selected using a cost function that measures the degree of match between all possible pairs of points. Numerous control points (typically around 50 pairs) are found from matched pairs of gradient contours and use in a global, rubber sheet, polynomial warp to refine the registration. This approach is applied to register a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image (ERS2, 12.5 m pixels) and a Thematic Mapper (TM) optical image (Landsat-5, 28.5 m pixels) automatically. Several examples with different scene content are shown to validate the approach and discussed in terms of residual registration error and processing efficiency. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we present a novel automatic and unsupervised change-detection approach specifically oriented to the analysis of multitemporal single-channel single-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. This approach is based on a closed-loop process made up of three main steps: 1) a novel preprocessing based on a controlled adaptive iterative filtering; 2) a comparison between multitemporal images carried out according to a standard log-ratio operator; and 3) a novel approach to the automatic analysis of the log-ratio image for generating the change-detection map. The first step aims at reducing the speckle noise in a controlled way in order to maximize the discrimination capability between changed and unchanged classes. In the second step, the two filtered multitemporal images are compared to generate a log-ratio image that contains explicit information on changed areas. The third step produces the change-detection map according to a thresholding procedure based on a reformulation of the Kittler-Illingworth (KI) threshold selection criterion. In particular, the modified KI criterion is derived under the generalized Gaussian assumption for modeling the distributions of changed and unchanged classes. This parametric model was chosen because it is capable of better fitting the conditional densities of classes in the log-ratio image. In order to control the filtering step and, accordingly, the effects of the filtering process on change-detection accuracy, we propose to identify automatically the optimal number of despeckling filter iterations [Step 1)] by analyzing the behavior of the modified KI criterion. This results in a completely automatic and self-consistent change-detection approach that avoids the use of empirical methods for the selection of the best number of filtering iterations. Experiments carried out on two sets of multitemporal images (characterized by different levels of speckle noise) acquired by the European Remote Sensing 2 satellite SAR sensor confirm the effectiveness of the proposed unsupervised approach, which results in change-detection accuracies very similar to those that can be achieved by a manual supervised thresholding. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (Auteur) The input roughness parameters for electromagnetic backscattering modelling need to be accurate to estimate radar measurements correctly over bare soils, particularly in agricultural environments. This paper propose to evaluate the roughness description in terms of several characterisations through a correlation function using a numerical backscattering model. The experimental database used in this study is based on ASAR-ENVISAT experimental campaigns in the Beauce region (France). Two presentations of the surface height correlation function are proposed in this study. The first one, referred to as the "Ïfunction" fits the experimental correlation functions up to the correlation length, while the second one, the "(a,b) function" fits the correlation function for scales corresponding to positive values. A relationship is proposed between the rms height of soil surface and the shape of the correlation function. Using Ïfunction, comparisons between radar measurements for high incidence angles and simulations based on the numerical backscattering model (moment method) show a good agreement for soil surfaces with an rms height smaller than 2 cm with medium and high soil moisture.
