[Termes IGN] Pacifique (océan)Résumé : (auteur) Understanding mantle flow is key to elucidate how deep Earth dynamics relate to tectonics at the global scale. The convective mass transport is reflected in lateral variations of the gravity field, seismic velocities, as well as deformations of the Earth's surface. Yet, upper to mid-mantle dynamics have been difficult to constrain at the medium scales of thousands of km. Here, we analyze the second-order horizontal derivatives of seafloor topography and of the gravity potential over the Pacific and Northern Indian ocean basins, and provide evidence for periodic undulations of 1600-2000 km wavelength in both signals, elongated along the direction of absolute plate motion. We investigate potential crustal and lithospheric sources and show that at least part of this signal must originate below the lithosphere, with alignments of sub-lithospheric upper mantle mass excess below seafloor lows. Furthermore, we find that these alignments coincide geographically over wide areas with similarly periodic slow seismic velocity fingers located at upper mantle depths. These two fields may thus record an intermediate scale of mantle convection below ocean basins, which cannot be explained by purely thermal convection and requires instead lateral variations in composition in the upper mantle. Elucidating the nature of the detected mass excess sources coincident with the slow seismic velocities calls for a joint dynamical modeling of all observations in a thermo-chemical context. [Termes IGN] Tohoku (Japon)Résumé : (auteur) We conduct a global analysis of GRACE-reconstructed gravity gradients from July 2004 to February 2011, to test whether the deep signals preceding the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake can be detected before the event as a specific feature originating from solid Earth. First, we improve the angular resolution of the gravity gradients using two overlapping ranges of azimuthal sensitivity to investigate short-term signals of large amplitude aligned with the orientation of the Northwestern Pacific subduction. Then, we set-up a method to identify consistent solid Earth signals shared by different GRACE gravity models. Robust signals in a model are selected based on their spatial overlap and relative intensity with the signals of another model, so that their sensitivity to the GRACE data processing and ocean dealiasing product can be tested. We show that the dipolar gravity gradient anomaly before the Tohoku earthquake is nearly unique in space and time in the GRACE GRGS03 solutions. A well-resolved dipolar spatial pattern, typical of dislocations within the solid Earth and poorly sensitive to the ocean dealiasing model, is detected. In addition, the preseismic gravity gradient increase is highly consistent between the GRGS03 and CSR06 solutions, independently from their respective oceanic corrections, and can be clearly distinguished from rare anomalies of similar amplitudes all associated with the water cycle over continental areas. Our approach offers solutions for the continuous monitoring of the Pacific subduction belt to document transient slabs motions in real time from global satellite gravity fields, and their relation with shallower deformations and seismic events. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Structure from motion (SfM) is an accessible and non-intrusive method of three-dimensional (3D) data capture popular for tropical coral reef surveying. In the north-east Pacific Ocean, where there are many environmentally sensitive benthic organisms whose morphology and function are equally important, SfM surveys are less commonly studied. Temperate waters pose unique challenges to SfM workflows, which must be systematically unpacked to understand their impact on data quality and veracity. This uncertainty raises broader questions concerning SfM as a spatial data-acquisition and ecological characterisation method in temperate waters, and whether a systematic workflow assessment reveals vital relationships between SfM implementation parameters, 3D data products and their implications for underwater SfM surveys. This paper, the second of two empirical assessments, reports on a series of wet-lab and dryland tests quantifying the impact that temperate waters, underwater cameras, and photograph quantity and configuration have on SfM accuracy. These tests provided crucial accuracy benchmarks informing subsequent field-based surveys and revealed that underwater SfM workflows can generate highly accurate 3D models in temperate waters. [Termes IGN] secours d'urgenceRésumé : (auteur) Natural disasters have caused substantial economic losses and numerous casualties. The demand analysis of relief supplies is the premise and basis for efficient relief operations after disasters. With the widespread use of social media, it has become a vital channel for people to report their demand for relief supplies and provides a way to obtain information on disaster areas. Therefore, we present a topic model-based framework and establish a demand dictionary and a gazetteer that aims to identify the spatial distribution of the demand for relief supplies by using social media data. Taking the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan (also called Yolanda) as a case study, we identify the potential topics of tweets with the biterm topic model, screen the tweets related to demands, and obtain the demand and location information from tweets to study the distribution of the relief supplies needs. The results show that, based on the demand dictionary, a gazetteer and the biterm topic model, the effective demand for relief supplies can be extracted from tweets. The proposed framework is feasible for the identification of accurate demand information and its distribution. Further, this framework can be applied to other types of disaster responses and can facilitate relief operations. [Termes IGN] sédimentRésumé : (Auteur) The shore zone is the most active zone in the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and lithosphere of nature, and has the environmental characteristics of both ocean and land. The ICESat-2 satellite provides height measurements of shore zone using a photon-counting LiDAR. The purpose of this study is to explore the application potential of ICESat-2 satellite data in shore zone classification. Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska, was chosen as the study area. Firstly, in this study, the upper and lower boundaries of the shore zone of the study area were extracted based on Google Earth images. The slope and width between the two boundaries were then calculated according to the formula. Secondly, six statistical indicators (standard deviation, relative standard deviation, average absolute deviation, relative average deviation, absolute median error and quartile deviation) related to the substrate and sediment classification that could reflect the characteristics of the shore zone profile were extracted, and the statistical indicators were used as input parameters of the softmax regression model for classification. Finally, the accuracy of the shore zone classification was validated using the ShoreZone classification system. The results show that, among the 246 shore zone sections in the study area, 86% (212) has been correctly classified. The results therefore indicate that ICESat-2 data can be used to support the characterization of shore zone morphology.
