[Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a novel method for retrieving three-dimensional (3-D) displacement fields of mining areas from a single interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) pair. This method fully exploits the mechanism of mining subsidence, specifically the proportional relationship between the horizontal displacement and horizontal gradient of vertical displacements caused by underground mining. This method overcomes the limitations of conventional InSAR techniques that can only measure one-dimensional (1-D) deformation of mining area along the radar line-of-sight direction. The proposed method is first validated with simulated 3-D displacement fields, which are obtained by the FLAC3D software. The root mean square errors of the 3-D displacements retrieved by the proposed method are 13.7, 27.6 and 3.6 mm for the West–East, North–South, and Up–Down components, respectively. We then apply the proposed method to estimate the 3-D displacements of the Qianyingzi and the Xuzhou coal mines in China, respectively, each along with two Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array Type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar images. Results show that the estimated 3-D displacement is highly consistent with that of the field surveying. This demonstrates that the proposed method is an effective approach for retrieving 3-D mining displacement fields and will play an important role in mining-related hazard prevention and environment assessment under limited InSAR acquisitions. [Termes IGN] tectonique des plaquesRésumé : (auteur) Okinotorishima Island is the southern most island of Japan, located on the Philippine Sea plate. On the island, Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) set triangulation points and a GPS continuous observation station in 1989 and 2005, respectively, and has conducted GPS surveys since 1992 for surveying and crustal deformation monitoring. This report describes the displacement of Okinotorishima Island from 2005 to 2013 as a result of re-analyzing GPS data using GAMIT software. The displacement suggests that Okinotorishima Island has moved WNW at Vns = +21.6 mm/year and Vew = -58.0 mm/year, or moved N66.8°W at 61.9 mm/year. The rate of collection of data at the island is lower than that of the GSI’s other GNSS stations because the station is an extremely isolated island in the Pacific Ocean. In order to monitor the movement of Philippine Sea plate, it is necessary to continue the maintenance of observation devices and enhance the station’s data availability. [Termes IGN] zone sinistréeRésumé : (Auteur) Context : In the Mediterranean area, different post-fire management strategies are used for coppices of resprouting species to promote a more regular forest structure, enhance plant growth, and reduce fire risk. However, the effects of these management treatments on forest-associated fauna are unknown, which in turn could be limiting their beneficial effects.
Aims : The aim of this work was to determine whether forest management of a recently burned area dominated by a vigorous resprouting tree species (Arbutus unedo L.) affects ant communities.
Methods : Ant communities, sampled using pitfall traps, were examined from unmanaged and selective thinning coppices of A. unedo. Ants are here used as bioindicators of ecosystem health and surrogates for other animal groups.
Results : Very limited effects of these post-fire management strategies on the structure and composition of ant communities were found. The lack of effects could be due to the reported small changes in physical conditions among treatments; or either, the most sensitive ant species to these post-fire management treatments might be the same ones affected by fire and, consequently, the ant species that would potentially be affected most were no longer in the study area.
Conclusion : The lack of any significant effects caused by these post-fire management practices on the associated fauna of A. unedo coppices points out the suitability of these treatments in these circumstances.

[Termes IGN] rétrodiffusionRésumé : (Auteur) A discrete scattering model, based on the radiative-transfer theory, is used to simulate the backscattering of burned pine canopies at C-band. The model is first parameterized either with direct field measurements on a selected burned area in Greece or with proper estimations of the required variables, for which direct measurements were not possible. The simulated backscatter at VV polarization was compared against European Remote Sensing 2 (ERS-2) observations. The comparison was based on the observed backscattering of nine burned plots, during four different postfire acquisitions (n=36). In general, the model provides satisfying estimations of the backscattering with a root-mean-square error of 1.01 dB. The copolar signal for both HH and VV showed a mild decrease with increasing fire impacts and was considerably affected by the incidence angle. From the experiments performed in the simulated environment, it is concluded that the SAR copolar (C-band) backscatter varies with respect to certain fire impact levels. Other important acquisition- or stand-dependent variables (such as incidence angle and snag age) were also found to impact the relationship between backscatter and fire impacts. Finally, the backscattering variability on increasing volumetric soil moisture (VSM) and snag moisture was examined. The increase of VSM from 20% to 30% amplified the signal in both copolarized bands by 1.2-1.5 dB. This amplification was more apparent on VV polarization than in HH polarization. Instead, the HH signal proved to be more sensitive on the increase of snag moisture, which was tested under a stable dry soil.
