[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) New genotypes of hybrid poplars from the Aigeiros and Tacamahaca sections have great potential for increasing genetic gain from selection. The most promising traits are associated with productivity and resistance to Sphaerulina musiva -induced canker while wood density can be selected for secondarily. A minimum age of 8 years is reliable to select fast-growing resistant clones in northern climates. Productivity, wood density, and disease resistance of hybrid poplar clones are important traits when selecting for cultivation at an industrial scale. We studied 1978 hybrid poplar clones from 63 families, bred from poplars native (Populus balsamifera and Populus deltoides) and non-native to Canada from the Aigeiros and Tacamahaca sections, to improve economically important traits for plantations in northern Alberta. [Termes IGN] TibetRésumé : (Auteur) Permafrost is extremely sensitive to variance in external hydrothermal conditions. InSAR has advantages in monitoring surface deformation with decent temporal and spatial resolution as well as millimeter precision. In particular, the StaMPS-InSAR method can remove the disturbances of inaccurate digital elevation model (DEM), atmospheric delays and spatiotemporal decorrelation for an accurate estimation of temporal surface deformation. In this paper, a set of ascending and descending Sentinel-1 imageries spanning from March 2017 to June 2018 were acquired and processed by StaMPS-InSAR in order to investigate dynamic changes of permafrost in Wudaoliang Basin, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). The results revealed that significant seasonal changes of permafrost, namely subsidence (thawing) in summer and uplift (freezing) in winter, can be observed throughout the Wudaoliang region. This study shows the StaMPS-InSAR analysis on Sentinel-1 datasets has great potential in regional permafrost investigation. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) The mid-20th century changes in North Atlantic Ocean dynamics, e.g. slow-down of the Atlantic meridional overturning thermohaline circulation (AMOC), have been considered as early signs of tipping points in the Earth climate system. We hypothesized that these changes have significantly altered boreal forest growth dynamics in northeastern North America (NA) and northern Europe (NE), two areas geographically adjacent to the North Atlantic Ocean. To test our hypothesis, we investigated tree growth responses to seasonal large-scale oceanic and atmospheric indices (the AMOC, North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and Arctic Oscillation (AO)) and climate (temperature and precipitation) from 1950 onwards, both at the regional and local levels. We developed a network of 6876 black spruce (NA) and 14437 Norway spruce (NE) tree-ring width series, extracted from forest inventory databases. Analyses revealed post-1980 shifts from insignificant to significant tree growth responses to summer oceanic and atmospheric dynamics both in NA (negative responses to NAO and AO indices) and NE (positive response to NAO and AMOC indices). The strength and sign of these responses varied, however, through space with stronger responses in western and central boreal Quebec and in central and northern boreal Sweden, and across scales with stronger responses at the regional level than at the local level. Emerging post-1980 associations with North Atlantic Ocean dynamics synchronized with stronger tree growth responses to local seasonal climate, particularly to winter temperatures. Our results suggest that ongoing and future anomalies in oceanic and atmospheric dynamics may impact forest growth and carbon sequestration to a greater extent than previously thought. Cross-scale differences in responses to North Atlantic Ocean dynamics highlight complex interplays in the effects of local climate and ocean-atmosphere dynamics on tree growth processes and advocate for the use of different spatial scales in climate-growth research to better understand factors controlling tree growth. [Termes IGN] Pinus sylvestrisRésumé : (auteur) Several techniques were used to investigate the threshold minimum temperature inducing severe frost damage during winter in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) needles and stems from southern provenances in the Iberian Peninsula. Chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, electrolyte leakage (EL), visual scoring (VS), and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were compared. Chl fluorescence, and in particular the maximum potential photosystem II (PSII) efficiency – estimated through the dark-acclimated Fv/Fm ratio -, was found to be a simple, non-destructive indicator of freezing tolerance in needles, as expected. Moreover, the existence of a Chl-containing tissue, the cortical bark chlorenchyma, allowed us the use of Chl fluorescence as a new non-destructive indicator of frost damage in live tissues of Pinus sylvestris L. stems.F reezing tolerance values of southern provenances are compared with those found by other authors in the northern distribution limit of the species.
