[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Rule-based cellular automata (CA) have been increasingly applied to the simulation of geographical phenomena, such as urban evolution and land-use changes. However, these models have difficulties and uncertainties in soliciting transition rules for a large complex region. This paper presents an extended cellular automaton in which transition rules are represented by using case-based reasoning (CBR) techniques. The common k-NN algorithm of CBR has been modified to incorporate the location factor to reflect the spatial variation of transition rules. Multi-temporal remote-sensing images are used to obtain the adaptation knowledge in the temporal dimension. This model has been applied to the simulation of urban development in the Pearl River Delta which has a hierarchy of cities. Comparison indicates that this model can produce more plausible results than rule-based CA in simulating this large complex region in 1988-2002. [Termes IGN] raisonnement inductifRésumé : (Auteur) The SRTM dataset is available at the USGS seamless website with one arc-second pixel spacing for the U.S. Recently, the value for horizontal resolution has been questioned. One paper (Smith and Sandwell, 2003) suggests that 60 meters may be more accurate, implying that the resolution is twice the provided spacing. For users of this data, the horizontal resolution is very important for their analyses. Hence, this paper addresses this important question by using two different approaches: coherence spectra and step-response. The coherence spectra approach uses statistical techniques to compare the SRTM dataset against a more accurate one, while the step response approach uses the observed step response in many areas of the dataset to estimate the width of the averaging function used to produce the SRTM data. Results from this study show that the resolution is between 1 and 1.6 pixels, depending on the local variability of the elevation data; with higher resolution near sharp edges and corners, and lower resolution in smoother areas. [Termes IGN] représentation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A common concern when working with health-related data is that national standard guidelines are designed to preserve individual statistical information, usually recorded as text or in a spreadsheet format (‘statistical confidentiality’), but lack appropriate rules for visualizing this information on maps (‘spatial confidentiality’). Privacy rules to protect spatial confidentiality become more and more important, as governmental agencies increasingly incorporate Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool for collecting, storing, analysing, and disseminating spatial information. The purpose of this paper is to propose the first step of a general framework for presenting the location of confidential point data on maps using empirical perceptual research. The overall objective is to identify geographic masking methods that preserve both the confidentiality of individual locations, and at the same time the essential visual characteristics of the original point pattern.
