Ce système est prévu comme un "applicatif" d'un système d'information géographique existant visant l'analyse, la gestion et l'édition de bases de données localisées, associé à un logiciel de simulation de propagation de feux de forêts. L'originalité d'un tel outil est d'associer un ensemble de fonctionnalités de gestion des données DFCI et des procédures d'analyse spatiale pour l'évaluation et la cartographie du risque d'incendie (dont on propose une méthodologie de calcul). L'absence à ce jour de méthode valide et formalisée d'évaluation du risque, la vocation "générique" de cet outil logiciel vis-à-vis de ses utilisateurs, ainsi que la connexion avec le SIG (ARC/INFO) sont autant de difficultés qui ont orienté les choix et les méthodes de conception.
