[Termes IGN] peintureRésumé : (Auteur) Current on-demand map design tools on the Web do not support cartographic and semiologic rules. Moreover they rarely offer to users to customise their styles. We propose a dialogue application in order to take the user’s needs into account and to bring the cartographic expertise he may lack as well. In this paper, we argue that on-demand map design should benefit altogether from user artistic capacities and from cartographic theory. Our approach consists in analysing the exploration of colours and how colours support the cartographic rules. Then we propose a process to conceive legends by means of painters’ palettes illustrated with an example of a painting by Matisse. [Termes IGN] visionRésumé : (Auteur) Current cartographic tools allow technically novice and expert users to make maps. However resulting legends may be of poor quality because of the lack of cartographic and visual perception knowledge. The purpose of our research work is to help users to select good sets of colours in order to build a legend that is satisfactory for them, i.e. that fit their tastes and needs, and correct, i.e. that respects cartographic rules. We propose a design process made up of three steps: identification of user's preferences on colours, proposition of suitable legends, and refinement of legends. Two strategies respecting this process are implemented with the help of map samples and painters' palettes. [Termes IGN] système multi-agentsRésumé : (Auteur) The growing availability of digital geographical data induces a growing need for producing Maps on Demand. In this context the aim of this paper is to present three original methods to automatically improve existing legends. At the current step of our research we are focusing on colour change only but the results are already very positive. A legend is composed of legend-lines and the aim of the processes is to change the colours of legend-lines to improve colour contrasts while respecting the relationships of Association, Order or Difference each legend-line has with the others. Thus we follow Bertin's approach (Bertin, 1967) of decomposing a legend into a set of couples relating the sign and its meaning. In our approach, we distinguish 1/ the cartographic rules, 2/ the data modelling that hold this knowledge and 3/ the solutions proposed for legend improvement. Three methods are proposed: one based on Constraints Solving Problem method, one based on Multi- Agent System and the last based on Local Search. The two first are limited to an analysis of contrast between legend-lines whereas the last computes the contrast on the map between cartographic symbols which is more accurate. The quality of the results of course mainly depends on the understanding of cartographic rules and their balance. These methods could be used to propose new cartographic services on the web. Nevertheless, aspects of the design of such views and of their impact on readers have rarely been investigated in cartographic research. The establishment of cartographic design principles is missing, to a large extent. Within the framework of a research project, propositions for such principles were derived by evaluating settings and options for specific graphic variables. Based on an inventory of design aspects and graphic variables for 3D maps, selected cues for two major design aspects (degree of abstraction and size of map objects) and five different graphic variables (viewing inclination, zoom factor, light direction, haze density, and sky structure) were evaluated by means of 3D map examples and expert interviews. A set of cartographic design principles was derived from this evaluation and proposed for more detailed user tests. The proposed design principles could also be seen as the beginning of a framework to extend cartographic theory and assist map authors in the iterative design process.
