[Termes IGN] précision des mesuresRésumé : (Auteur) Dès la seconde moitié du 17ème siècle, des savants préconisaient l'adoption d'un système uniforme de mesures, rattaché à un phénomène physique mesurable. Ils se heurtèrent aux habitudes acquises et aux particularismes locaux ou nationaux. La Révolution, faisant table rase du passé, décida la création d'un système de mesures entièrement nouveau, susceptible d'une adoption universelle. Une commission des poids et mesures, réunissant les noms les plus illustres, proposa les définitions nouvelles du système, la partition décimale, et préconisa de le déduire d'une unité fondamentale de longueur, rattachée aux dimensions terrestres, égale à la dix millionième partie du quart du méridien. Les astronomes géodésiens Delambre et Méchain, héritiers d'une glorieuse tradition géodésique française, furent chargés de déterminer cette unité en mesurant une méridienne très précise de Dunkerque à Barcelone. Cette mesure, qui fait date dans l'histoire de la géodésie, aboutit à la matérialisation des étalons de longueur et de masse en 1799. L'adoption postérieure quasi universelle du système métrique décimal, est le meilleur témoignage du génie prophétique de ses concepteurs.
