[Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Global change is of key scientific interest, and satellite altimetry recently became a major tool to provide information on sea level on a continuous and worldwide basis. However, any error in the radar altimeter data, and more specifically any error in the altimeter drift, would directly map as an undetected error in the derived mean sea level trend. This explains why satellite altimeter calibration is such an important metrological challenge for all satellite missions such as Jason-2 (US/France), Cryosat-2 (Europe), HY-2A (China), and many others.
On January 20–21, 2011, an international meeting was organized in Chania, Crete, on the following theme: “satellite altimetry calibration and deformation monitoring with GNSS”. Due to the importance of the scientific problems discussed during this meeting and to recent new methods proposed for altimeter calibration, the idea of a Special Issue in Advances in Space Research was proposed. An international call for participation was issued shortly after, and 27 manuscripts were submitted from authors from six different countries. All manuscripts went through the standard peer-review process for ASR with a minimum of two referees for each paper.
Many topics were addressed for this Special Issue: satellite altimeter calibration using dedicated GPS receivers, tide gauges or buoys, calibration sites, calibration on lakes or rivers, coastal altimetry, and crustal deformation using GPS techniques.
We thank the contribution of each author and extend our gratitude to all the referees; those who agreed to be identified by name are listed at the end of this issue.

[Termes IGN] projection Universal Transverse MercatorRésumé : (Auteur) Although the set of Gauss-Kruger projection formulae recognized and used worldwide thus far is "the 2nd formulae ", which is limited to use within certain longitudinal zones, the recently discovered usefulness of "the 1st formulae ", which can be applied to extensive areas on the globe, has been understood from a new perspective. The formulae are favorable in view of the modern computer environment, in which they are of importance for recognizing details comprehensively, not only in the discipline of survey and mapping but also in geospatial information management. In this paper, I try to elaborate a comprehensive derivation of these formulae, including those for meridian convergence and scale factor, so that anyone interested in geospatial information management can understand them with minimum background knowledge. [Termes IGN] transformation de coordonnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper develops a novel Coordinate Transformation method (CT-method), with which the orientation angles (roll, pitch, heading) of the local tangent frame of the GPS/INS system are transformed into those (omega, phi, kappa) of the map projection frame for direct georeferencing (DG). Especially, the orientation angles in the map projection frame were derived from a sequence of coordinate transformations. The effectiveness of orientation angles transformation was verified through comparing with DG results obtained from conventional methods (Legat method1 and POSPac method2) using empirical data. Moreover, the CT-method was also validated with simulated data. One advantage of the proposed method is that the orientation angles can be acquired simultaneously while calculating position elements of exterior orientation (EO) parameters and auxiliary points coordinates by coordinate transformation. These three methods were demonstrated and compared using empirical data. Empirical results show that the CT-method is both as sound and effective as Legat method. Compared with POSPac method, the CT-method is more suitable for calculating EO parameters for DG in map projection frames. DG accuracy of the CT-method and Legat method are at the same level. DG results of all these three methods have systematic errors in height due to inconsistent length projection distortion in the vertical and horizontal components, and these errors can be significantly reduced using the EO height correction technique in Legat’s approach. Similar to the results obtained with empirical data, the effectiveness of the CT-method was also proved with simulated data. [Termes IGN] Terre (planète)Résumé : (auteur) In the last decade, satellite gravimetry has been revealed as a pioneering technique for mapping mass redistributions within the Earth system. This fact has allowed us to have an improved understanding of the dynamic processes that take place within and between the Earth’s various constituents. Results from the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission have revolutionized Earth system research and have established the necessity for future satellite gravity missions. In 2010, a comprehensive team of European and Canadian scientists and industrial partners proposed the e.motion (Earth system mass transport mission) concept to the European Space Agency. The proposal is based on two tandem satellites in a pendulum orbit configuration at an altitude of about 370 km, carrying a laser interferometer inter-satellite ranging instrument and improved accelerometers. In this paper, we review and discuss a wide range of mass signals related to the global water cycle and to solid Earth deformations that were outlined in the e.motion proposal. The technological and mission challenges that need to be addressed in order to detect these signals are emphasized within the context of the scientific return. This analysis presents a broad perspective on the value and need for future satellite gravimetry missions.
