[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Preharvest information on the quality of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) timber is required by the forest industry in Nordic countries, due to the strong association between the technical quality and product recovery of this species in particular. The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of estimating external quality attributes and classifying the quality of mature Scots pine trees by terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). The tree quality was estimated using a random forest approach, based on both field and TLS measurements of stem diameters, tree height and branch heights. The relative root mean squared errors of the TLS measurements for tree height, diameter, diameter at 6 m and the lowest living and dead branch height were 7.1%, 5.9%, 8.9%, 9.6% and 42.9%, respectively. The highest errors of the branch heights were caused by the shadowing effect in the point cloud data. The quality classes were estimated accurately, based on both (field and TLS measured) tree attributes. Trees were classified with 95.0% and 83.6% accuracy into three operationally-important quality classes and with 87.1% and 76.4% accuracy into five classes using, field or TLS measurements, respectively. The obtained quality classification results were promising. The enhanced tree quality information could have a significant effect on planning forest management procedures, wood supply chains and optimizing the flow of raw materials. To fully integrate tree quality measurements in operational forestry, the methods used should be fully automated. [Termes IGN] traitement automatique d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur)The Stone Pine (pinus pinea) is native to the Mediterranean region and has been used for their edible pine nuts since prehistoric times. They are widespread in horticultural cultivation as ornamental trees and planted in gardens and parks around the world. Economically speaking, the Stone Pine is very important for the agriculture sector, for tourism, and for the health sector. In this research, a pilot area located in Mount Lebanon is compared for changes in the Stone Pine cover between the years of 1962 and 2012. The comparison is based on processing a hyperspectral image provided by the European Space Agency (ESA) and a Landsat ETM+ image as well as topographic maps. Several issues related to the use of CHRiS-Proba hyperspectral images have been investigated and analyzed. The results established that hyperspectral data: (a) is 30 percent or more accurate and efficient when compared with multispectral data, and (b) helps determine precise extent of the Stone Pine cover. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) - Context Modification of stand density by thinning may buffer the response of tree growth and vigor to changes in climate by enhancing soil water availability. $- Aims We tested the impact of thinning intensity on cambial growth of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis L.) under semi-arid, Mediterranean conditions. $- Methods A multiple thinning experiment was established on an Aleppo pine plantation in Spain. We analysed the stem growth dynamics of two different crown classes under four different thinning intensities (15 %, 30 %, and 45 % removal of the basal area) for 2 years, based on biweekly band dendrometer recordings. Local relative extractable soil water was derived from the use of a water balance model Biljou© (available at https://appgeodb.nancy.inra.fr/biljou/) and used as an explanatory variable. $- Results Radial growth was mainly controlled by soil water availability during the growing season, and differed by crown class. The growth rates of dominant trees were significantly higher than the growth rates of suppressed trees. Removal of 30 % and 45 % of the initial basal area produced a growth release in both dominant and suppressed trees that did not occur under less intense thinning treatments. $- Conclusions Soil water availability was the main driver of radial growth during the growing season. Forest management confirmed its value for ameliorating the effects of water lim-itations on individual tree growth. These results may help managers understand how altering stand density will differen-tially affect diameter growth responses of Aleppo pine to short-term climatic fluctuations, promoting forests that are resilient to future climatic conditions.
