[Termes IGN] coûtRésumé : (auteur) Biodiversity conservation measures designed to ensure ecological connectivity depend on the reliable modeling of species movements. Least-cost path modeling makes it possible to identify the most likely dispersal paths within a landscape and provide two items of ecological relevance: (i) the spatial location of these least-cost paths (LCPs) and (ii) the accumulated cost along them (’cost distance’, CD). This spatial analysis requires that cost values be assigned to every type of land cover. The sensitivity of both LCPs and CDs to the cost scenarios has not been comprehensively assessed across realistic landscapes and diverging cost scenarios. We therefore assessed it in diverse landscapes sampled over metropolitan France and with widely diverging cost scenarios. The spatial overlap of the LCPs was more sensitive to the cost scenario than the CD values were. In addition, highly correlated CD matrices can be derived from very different cost scenarios. Although the range of the cost values and the properties of each cost scenario significantly influenced the outputs of LCP modeling, landscape composition and configuration variables also explained their variations. Accordingly, we provide guidelines for the use of LCP modeling in ecological studies and conservation planning. [Termes IGN] Vienne (86)Résumé : (auteur) Urban landscapes are rapid changing ecosystems with diverse urban forms that impede the movement of organisms. Therefore, designing and modelling ecological networks to identify biodiversity reservoirs and their corridors are crucial aspects of land management in terms of population persistence and survival. However, the land cover/use maps used for landscape connectivity modelling can lack information in such a highly complex environment. In this context, remote sensing approaches are gaining interest for the development of accurate land cover/use maps. We tested the efficiency of an object-based classification using open-source projects and free images to identify vegetation strata at a very fine scale and evaluated its contribution to landscape connectivity modelling. We compared different spatial and thematic resolutions from existing databases and object-based image analyses in three French cities. Our results suggested that this remote sensing approach produced reliable land cover maps to differentiate artificial areas, tree vegetation and herbaceous vegetation. Land cover maps enhanced with the remote sensing products substantially changed the structural connectivity indices, showing an improvement up to four times the proportion of herbaceous and tree vegetation. In addition, functional connectivity indices evaluated for several forest species were mainly impacted for medium dispersers in quantitative (metrics) and qualitative (corridors) estimations. Thus, the combination of this reproductible remote sensing approach and landscape connectivity modelling at a very fine scale provides new insights into the characterisation of ecological networks for conservation planning. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Residential areas and road networks have a strong geographical correlation. The development of a single geographical feature could destroy the geographical correlation. It is necessary to establish collaborative generalization models suitable for multiple features. However, existing road network generalization methods for mapping purposes do not fully consider residential areas. Compared with road networks, residential areas have a higher priority in cartographic generalization. In this regard, this study proposes a road network generalization method constrained by residential areas. First, the roads and settlements obtained from clustering residential areas were classified. Next, the importance of the settlements was evaluated and certain settlements were selected as the control features. Subsequently, a geographical network with the settlements as the nodes was built, and the traffic paths between adjacent settlements were searched. Finally, redundant paths between the settlements were simplified, and the visual continuity and topological connectivity were checked. The data of a 1:50,000 road network and residential areas were used as the experimental data. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method preserves the overall structure and relative density characteristics of the road network, as well as the geographical correlation between the road network and residential areas. [Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Despite well-formulated goals for environmental protection in the forestry sector, the biodiversity crisis remains. Protected habitats are often small, isolated and lack continuity. We studied forest planning at a landscape scale as a method to increase habitat connectivity, and improve conservation values whilst maintaining high levels of forest production. We assessed the financial impacts of landscape planning for the landowners, and present a fee-fund system to solve unequal burdens among them. As case studies, we used three landscapes along a latitudinal gradient in Sweden. The results demonstrate some variation between the landscapes in terms of the total cost for set asides and large differences in terms of the financial impact per landowner. Our conclusion is that forest landscape planning may be a way forward to improve conservation efforts, but given the variation in financial impacts, we propose to combine landscape planning with economic tools for compensation. [Termes IGN] Royaume-UniRésumé : (auteur) Utility networks comprise a fundamental part of our complex urban systems and the integration of digital representations of these networks across multiple spatial scales can be used to help address priority challenges. Deteriorating water utility infrastructure and low routing redundancy result in network fragility and thus supply outages when assets fail. Water distribution network configurations can be optimised for higher resilience but digital representations of the networks used for simulations and analyses are not integrated with the finer scale networks inside buildings. This integration is hindered by differences in conceptualisation and semantics employed by the relevant data standards. We suggest that the geospatial and geometric data contained in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and water distribution network (WDN) models can be used for their integration; and that this supports the use cases of optimising dynamic network partitioning, reducing the risk of underground utility strikes and planning for future network configurations with higher topological redundancy. In this study, we develop and demonstrate the application of a weight-based spatial algorithm for inferring water network connections between urban-scale WDNs and BIM models, showing that spatial data can be used in the absence of complete or consistent semantic representations. We suggest that the method has potential for transferability to infrastructure for other utility resources (such as waste water, electricity and gas) and make recommendations such as standardising the representation of connection points between disjoint utility network models and extending the normal practical spatial remit of BIM MEP modelling to encompass the space between buildings and WDNs.
