Le but de ce mémoire est avant tout d'éclairer ce domaine qui se retrouve dans tous les secteurs de la vie quotidienne. L'information géographique se caractérise d'abord par sa diversité tant concernant les sources, les acteurs que les applications. Les moyens d'accès à l'information géographique, qu'elle soit classique ou numérique, sont également des plus divers. Cette diversité est, en fait, liée à l'importance économique de l'information géographique surtout dans les domaines d'aide à la décision. L'Institut Géographique National et la Bibliothèque Nationale de France, à travers son Département des Cartes et Plans sont deux de ces acteurs de l'information géographique en France. Leurs rôles sont fondamentalement différents, voire opposés. Si l'IGN est à la fois un producteur et un utilisateur de l'information géographique, ce n'est pas le cas de la BNF, qui sera plutôt qualifiée de fournisseur d'accès. En effet, son rôle dans le cadre du dépôt légal, est avant tout de répertorier et de classer des cartes et autres documents concernant l'information géographique, principalement sur support papier. Cependant l'IGN, comme la BNF, accordent une place importante à Internet et à l'échange de leurs données par l'intermédiaire des réseaux.
