[Termes IGN] variance d'AllanRésumé : (auteur) The residual signal in VLBI, SLR, DORIS and GPS station motion, after a linear trend and seasonal components have been removed, is analysed to investigate site-specific and technique-specific error spectra. The study concentrates on 60 sites with dense observation history by two or more space geodetic techniques. Statistical methods include the Allan variance analysis and the three-cornered hat algorithm. The stability of time-series is defined by two parameters, namely the Allan deviation for a one-year sampling time (noise level) and the slope of the Allan variance graph with its spectral interpretation (noise type). The site-specific noise level is found to be in the range 0.5–3.5 mm in either horizontal direction and 1–4.5 mm in height for most sites. The distribution of site-specific noise type includes both white noise and flicker noise. White noise is predominant in the East direction. Both types of noise are found in the North direction, with no particular geographical clustering. In the Up direction, the Northern hemisphere sites seem to be split in two large geographical sectors characterised either by white noise or by flicker noise signatures. Technique-specific noise characteristics are estimated in several ways, leading to a white noise diagnostic for VLBI and SLR in all three local directions. DORIS has also white noise in the horizontal directions, whereas GPS has a flicker noise spectrum. The vertical noise spectrum is indecisive for both DORIS and GPS. The three-dimensional noise levels for the one-year sampling time are 1.7 mm for VLBI, 2.5 mm for SLR, 5.2 mm for DORIS, and 4.1 mm for GPS. For GPS, the long-term analysis homogeneity has a strong influence. In the case of a test solution reanalysed in a fully consistent way, the noise level drops to the VLBI level in horizontal and to the SLR level in vertical. The three-dimensional noise level for a one-year sampling time decreases to 1.8 mm. In addition, the percentage of stations with flicker noise drops to only about 20% of the network. [Termes IGN] téléphonie mobileRésumé : (Auteur) Mark Weiser is not exactly a household name. He was a chief technology officer at the Xerox Corporation's famous Palo Alto Research Center. This is the same outfit which brought us laser printing, Ethernet communications, the graphical user interface paradigm (including the mouse), and object-oriented programming. Like many of those who make a significant difference in technical fields, Mark Weiser's contributions are well known but his name is not. Dr. Weiser introduced the concept of "ubiquitous computing." He coined this term in 1988 to describe a new generation of the computer era, where the first two generations, that of the mainframe and the personal computer, would be superseded by one in which computers would disappear into the objects that surround us in our daily life both at the office and at home. He further posited that the best computer is a quiet, invisible servant whose "calm technology" informs us but doesn't demand our focus or attention. His idea, often tagged "UbiComp," has borne fruit and we now have smart coffee pots, smart printers, smart copy machines and the like, all connected via a wired or wireless network. Users of some of the smart devices in our UbiComp world, such as mobile telephones, personal digital assistants, cameras, and camcorders, would benefit by knowing their location wherever they might be - whether it's in an open field, on a street surrounded by skyscrapers, or inside an apartment building. As we all know, conventional GPS receivers don't always work where we would like them to. In order for a UbiComp device to know its position anywhere and anytime, we need "ubiquitous positioning" or UbiPos. And like UbiComp, UbiPos should inform us but not demand our focus or attention. In this month's column, we take a look at the available technologies that might be used to supplement conventional GPS positioning and some initial testing that will eventually lead to a UbiPos world, one in which we can locate anyone, anything, anytime, anywhere. [Termes IGN] surcharge océaniqueRésumé : (Auteur) In recent years, ocean tide loading displacements (OTLD) have been measured using the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). This study assesses the accuracy of GPS measurements of OTLD by comparison with VLBI measurements and estimates derived from numerical ocean tide models. A daily precise point positioning (PPP) analysis was carried out on ?11 years of GPS data for each of 25 sites that have previous OTLD estimates based on data from co-located VLBI sites. Ambiguities were fixed to integer values where possible. The resulting daily estimates of OTLD, at eight principal diurnal and semi-diurnal tidal frequencies, were combined to give GPS measurements of OTLD at each site. The 3D GPS and VLBI measurements of OTLD were compared with estimates computed (by convolution with Green’s functions) from five modern ocean tide models (CSR4.0, FES2004, GOT00.2, NAO99b and TPXO6.2). The GPS/model agreement is shown to be similar to the VLBI/model agreement. In the important radial direction, the GPS/model misfit is shown to be smaller than the VLBI/model misfit for seven of the eight tidal constituents; the exception being the K2 constituent. Fixing of GPS carrier-phase ambiguities to integer values resulted in a marginal improvement to the GPS/model agreement. Statistically, it is shown there is no significance to the difference between the fit of the GPS and VLBI measurements of OTLD to modelled values. Equally, differences in fit of either the complete set of GPS or VLBI estimates to the five sets of model-derived values cannot be identified with statistical significance. It is thus concluded that, overall, we cannot distinguish between GPS and VLBI measurements of OTLD, and that at the global scale, present ocean tide models are accurate to within the current measurement noise of these techniques.
