[Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) Error estimates of lidar observations are obtained by applying the General Law of Propagation of Variances (GLOPOV) to the direct georeferencing equation. Within the formulation of variance propagation, the most important consideration is the values used to describe the error of the hardware component observations including the global positioning system, inertial measurement unit, laser ranger, and laser scanner (angular encoder noise and beam divergence). Data tested yielded in general, pessimistic predictions as 85 percent of residuals were within the predicted error level. Simulated errors for varying scan angles and altitudes produced horizontal errors largely influenced by IMU subsystem error as well as angular encoder noise and beam divergence. GPS subsystem errors contribute the largest proportion of vertical error only at shallow scan angles and low altitudes. The transformation of the domination of GPS related error sources to total vertical error occurs at scan angles of 23°, 13°, and 8° at flying heights of 1,200 m, 2,000 m, and 3,000 m AGL, respectively. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (Auteur) This paper investigates the impact of rapid small-scale water vapor fluctuations on GPS height determination. Water vapor measurements from a Raman lidar are used for documenting the water vapor heterogeneities and correcting GPS signal propagation delays in clear sky conditions. We use data from four short observing sessions (6 h) during the VAPIC experiment (15 May–15 June 2004). The retrieval of wet delays from our Raman lidar is shown to agree well with radiosonde retrievals (bias and standard deviation (SD) were smaller than 1 and 2.8 mm, respectively) and microwave radiometers (from two different instruments, bias was 6.0/-6.6 mm and SD 1.3/3.8 mm). A standard GPS data analysis is shown to fail in accurately reproducing fast zenith wet delay (ZWD) variations. The ZWD estimates could be improved when mean post-fit phase residuals were removed. Several methodologies for integrating zenith lidar observations into the GPS data processing are also presented. The final method consists in using lidar wet delays for correcting a priori the GPS phase observations and estimating a scale factor for the lidar wet delays jointly with the GPS station position. The estimation of this scale factor allows correcting for a mis-calibration in the lidar data and provides in the same way an estimate of the Raman lidar instrument constant. The agreement of this constant with an independent determination using radiosonde data is at the level of 1–4%. The lidar wet delays were derived by ray-tracing from zenith pointing measurements: further improvement in GPS positioning is expected from slant path lidar measurements that would properly account for water vapor anisotropy. [Termes IGN] signalisation routièreRésumé : (Auteur) Roadway signs are important for safety, and transportation agencies need to identify sign condition changes to perform timely maintenance, including replacement. Currently, sign condition changes are inspected manually in the field, which is time consuming, costly, and some--times dangerous. This paper first proposes a novel algorithm to detect three condition changes: missing, tilted, and blocked signs, using GPS data and video log images. The algorithm consists of three steps: (a) Multi-Scale Sign Image Matching (m-sim), (b) Image feature analysis, and (c) Sign condition change detection and classification. The algorithm was tested using images with simulated sign condition changes and actual video images taken in Fiscal Year (fy) 2003 and 2005 by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (ladotd). The tests demonstrate the algorithm is effective to detect three types of sign condition changes. Out of 34,000 actual video log images, the algorithm detected and classified 100 percent of the missing signs, 72.7 percent of the tilted signs, and 66.7 percent of the blocked signs, for an overall 74.3 percent detection rate. These results show that the algorithm is useful for developing an intelligent roadway sign condition change detection system. [Termes IGN] système de contrôleRésumé : (Auteur) GPS provides position and velocity measurements, from which attitude information can also be synthesized for a fixed wing-aircraft. This suggests the potential of implementing a single-antenna GPS receiver as the sole navigation sensor for an aircraft. For several years, researchers at Seoul National University have investigated the feasibility of developing a low-cost automatic flight control system based on this design. Flight tests described have demonstrated that a single-antenna GPS receiver could be used as a primary sensor for low-cost flight control system of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or a backup system for an expensive UAV or general aviation (GA). [Termes IGN] système d'extensionRésumé : (Editeur) GPS has its limitations. [...] We know GPS works very well when there is direct line-of-sight view between the satellite tranmitters and the receivers and carrier-phase measurements can provide decimeter- and even centimeter-accuacies. So why not develop a ground-based system that works in a similar way to GPS, which would allow you to place the transmitters wherever you like ? Well, such as a system has indeed been developed and this month's column, a team of australian and U.S. researchers describes how they integrated the ground-based system together with GPS and INS to create a hybrid system that provides precise and accurate position information continuously in a variety of environments where GPS alone comes up short.
