Periodical GPS surveys were conducted from February 2000 to June 2005 but did not completely confirm the hypothesis, perhaps because of unregistered groundwater extraction or hydrogeology factors. [Termes IGN] Rhin (bassin)Résumé : (Auteur) In Holocene palaeogeographical studies, GIS nowadays is used in various ways, embracing either GIS modelling possibilities or GIS spatial data storage functionality. This paper is an example of the latter type of GIS use for reconstruction of the Holocene Rhine-Meuse delta (128x75 km; part of the Dutch coastal plain). Depositional traces of river courses (channel belts) are major features to map. We digitized mapped channel belt fragments and stored their reconstructed ages in a linked table. The GIS data structure allows checking for internal consistency of the implemented reconstruction, enabling iterative improvement while digitizing and labelling. Palaeogeographical maps for any given time during the Holocene result from GIS-database queries. Coupled to the GIS are high-resolution digital elevation data (sub-decimetre accurate laser-altimetry data covering the entire study area) and a database of ca 100000 borehole descriptions, allowing for further mapping improvements. The GIS structure and digital data together greatly improved mapping and enable larger areas to be mapped in greater detail with greater accuracy and in less time. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) National and regional obligations to control and maintain water quality have led to an increase in coastal and estuarine monitoring. A potentially valuable tool is high temporal and spatial resolution satellite ocean colour data. NASA's MODIS-Terra and -Aqua can capture data at both 250 m and 500 m spatial resolutions and the existence of two sensors provides the possibility for multiple daily passes over a scene. However, no robust atmospheric correction method currently exists for these data, rendering them unusable for quantitative monitoring applications. Therefore, this paper presents an automatic and dynamic atmospheric correction approach allowing the determination of ocean colour. The algorithm is based around the standard MODIS 1 km atmospheric correction, includes cloud masking and is applicable to all of the visible 500 m bands. Comparison of the 500 m ocean colour data with the standard 1 km data shows good agreement and these results are further supported by in situ data comparisons. In addition, a novel method to produce 500 m chlorophyll-a estimates is presented. Comparisons of the 500 m estimates with the standard MODIS OC3M algorithm and to in situ data from a near-coast validation site are given. [Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Auteur) The development and validation of an atmospheric correction algorithm designed for the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) with special emphasis on case-2 waters is described. The algorithm is based on inverse modelling of radiative transfer (RT) calculations using artificial neural network (ANN) techniques. The presented correction scheme is implemented as a direct inversion of spectral top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiances into spectral remote sensing reflectances at the bottom-of-atmosphere (BOA), with additional output of the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) at four wavelengths for validation purposes. The inversion algorithm was applied to 13 MERIS Level 1b data tracks of 2002-2003, covering the optically complex waters of the North and Baltic Sea region. A validation of the retrieved AOTs was performed with coincident in situ automatic sun-sky scanning radiometer measurements of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) from Helgoland Island located in the German Bight. The accuracy of the derived reflectances was validated with concurrent ship-borne reflectance measurements of the SIMBADA hand-held field radiometer. Compared to the MERIS Level2 standard reflectance product generated by the processor versions 3.55, 4.06 and 6.3, the results of the proposed algorithm show a significant improvement in accuracy, especially in the blue part of the spectrum, where the MERIS Level 2 reflectances result in errors up to 122% compared to only 19% with the proposed algorithm. The overall mean errors within the spectral range of 412.5-708.75 nm are calculated to be 46.2% and 18.9% for the MERIS Level2 product and the presented algorithm, respectively.
